Chess in Dunedin.

The fifth of a series of exhibitions of simultaneous play at chess which have been given by various players of eminence in different centres of New Zealand during the year took place on Wednesday night at ihe Otago Chess Club's rooms, when Mr David Forsyth, -ex-champion of New Zealand and present holder of the championship of Otago, elected to play single-handed against allcomers. Twelve players responded to the call, and the contest commenced at 8.15 o'c'ock, continuing iminterruptedly up to 1J.15 o'clock, with the appended result.

Mr Forsyth payed a variety of openings, but in the majority of games he offered the King's Gambit, to which his opponents replied with the Falkbeer Counter Gambit. A comparison of Mr Forsyth's effort with those of other exponents of simultaneous play is here given: —

It is only fair to ad-d that the team opposed to the Otago champion consisted of much stronger player 3 than Dr Heinemann and Messrs Edwards, Mason, and Davies had against them.
