Miller's Flat, September 19, 1905.

Dear " Magister." — When I was camped in ,ibe bush last summer with a few friends, evea-y clear night we heard a bird giving a shrili whistle or screech at short intervals. We never .saw ncr heard it in the daytime, ancl some of my friend's said it was a New Zealand laughing jackass, which comes about before rain, but others saia'it was the cuckoo. From the descriptions I have read I do not think it was the latter, and I have never heard of the former before. I wonder if you would help me to find out what it is, as I live 25 miles from any bush, and do not know much, about the native birds.— Kindly oblige. CoiJjmtY School Boy.
