WELLINGTON NOTES.
By Onlooker.
September 30.
At the monthly meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, ,o be held on October 2 36 new members will be elected. The club's membership has just doubled since Mi A. E. Whyte took the secretaryship.
The entries received for the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club are very satisfactory, although the grand total averages two per race less than last year, when the nominations received were a record. The comparative figures read as follows: —
Togos was not taken out of tho forfeit list until August 30. three days after the Rangitikei nominations closed, -and he was therefore not entitled to start at the last-named meeting. His owner ia reported to have had £10 on the machine when he won, and was very lucky to receive, the Wellington bookmakers being equally unlucky in having to pay out to the stable commissioner over the lace. The stake will go to Kuroki. Boris will not be seen out at the Hawke's Bay meeting, Mr Turnbull having scratched him on Monday last for all engagements. - Ngatarua was shipped across to Blenheim yesterday, and should settle the moderate opposition opposed to him there. The Hutt stables will bs represented by Black Squall Error, Coxswain, The Voucher, Strathfillan, Kaiuku, and St. Louis. Mr M'Manaway should win a race or two with his pair, Fancywork and Sir Percivale.
Prank Higgolt appears to have a real flier in Petticoat. In both events in which she started at Wanganui she shot away from the field and came in by herself. She was among the Yaldhurst lots submitted at auction last autumn, but failed to find a purchaser, and was afterwards purchased privately for 250gs. Mt Stead bred a full sister to Petticoat, a year older, named Knickerbockers. Petticoat has engagements at Otaki and Wellington, and should not be long winning her way out of the hack class. Higgolt also took Shiapnel Shell to Wanganui. He was started each day, but found the opposition too solid. His name appears among the acceptances for Mailborough, but your correspondent fancies he will bs kept for Otaki and Wellington. W. Davis, the Hutt trainer, took four horses to Wanganui, but 'did not start Ba'llarat. She was taken out of the Flying, in which her stable companion started, and rar second. Ballarat was accepted for in the Owen Stakes on the second day, but was afterwards withdrawn. Black Reynard was heavily backed with the bookmakers in Wellington for the Flying. He was not started on the second day, but will probably be seen out at Otaki. Alexieff, the Stepniak— Wish colt, was among those that finished behind Petticoat in the Maiden. Old Kohunui ran tip to his best form on the first day. When St. Lyra fell there was a good gap between Kohunui and the field, but he tired to nothing In the last two furlongs. The two stables named were the only ones that made the trp from the Hutt. Mr Prosser took up a big strng, but only succeeded in winning one race with Gold Crown, of whom the writer has a great opinion up to a mile and a-quarter. Perchance (The Possible— Miss Dsrgon) competed unsuccessfully in the Maiden Hack Race. Marguerita was no match for the Merriwee colts in the Guineas. The Stepniak filly did her best and answered gamely when Jenkins called on her for a final effort. Aorarnd (Merriwee — Ponaturi) was beaten m the Mile Hack Race by Kuroki, who is a useful sort. Marguerite was brought - out a<*ain in the Owen Stakes on the second day, the result of which went to prove that the Guineas form was correct. Aorangi had to put up with second plaoe in the Moutoa Hack Handicap. The stable started both Ghoorka and Flamen in the Stakes, but neither managed to get a place. Gold Crown made his second appeaiance in the Marangai Stakes, but was no match for Boomerang at the weights.
