ANNUAL HORSE PARADE.
The twenty-fourth annual parade of entire horses was held on Thursday under the auspices of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society at Tahuna Park under particularly unfavourable circumstances as regards weather. Shortly before midday the rain began to descend, and it soon became evident that there was no chance of the weather fairing. The grounds, already pretty well soaked by the rain of a few days ago, very &oon became sloppy, and judge 3, marshals, class stewards, and all those whose duties compelled their being outside had a particularly unpleasant, time of it. The attendance was, nevertheless, very good, though no doubt, as the day wore on, many more would have found their way to the park had the weather behaved better. The show itself was a strong one, generally speaking, there being plenty of animals of high quality in the various classes. In aged draught stallions the entries wore slightly in excess j of those of last year, the respective num- | bers being 31 and 29, and in thrce-year- | olds there was a very distinct advance in competition, 16 being paraded, as against 10 on the last occasion on which the society held its show. The carriage stalI lions differed but slightly in point of number, but there was an increase of from 1 four to nine in trotting stallions. Hackney stallions, unrepresented before, drew one i entry, but the animal was not on the ground. An award was, however, made owing to the transference of Brendor from the trotting to this class. The entries in thoroughbreds and ponies were much the same as last year, but, on the whole, there was an increase of entries of from 51 to 66. Otago had the honour of carrying off first, second, and third prizes for aged draught stallions, the owners of the winners being' Messrs J. R. Mackenzie (Pomahaka). Jas. Patrick (Outvam). and S. Young (Outram). In this section some of the animals sent into thf» ring- were taken back to their boxes somewhat hurriedly, under, apparently, some mistaken idea that the judging was concluded, and among the animals so taken back was Mr R. M'Donald's Royal Knight. This did not, however, affect results, but it is just as well than leaders should be quite sure that the judging is finished before they leave the ringwith their horses. The judges of the draughts were Mr A. Alexander (of Normanby, Taranaki) and Mr J. Shearer (of Ashburton). and the stewards in attendance were Messrs D. Andrew. J. Nimmo, and J. W. Blair. To Mr H. Craig (of Lawrence) was allotted the duty of judgingthe Harht horses, and he had associated with him Mr T. Ritchie (marshal) ancl Messrs A. Johnson and A. Roberts (class stewards). The society's hon. veterinary surgeon (Mr J. J. Karrigan) was also in attendance, and his services were utilised on one or two occasions. . The entries in aged draughts showed a slight increase, and some remarkably fine animals circled round the judges. Baron Graceful, a handsome bay colt, foaled in May, 1900, and bred by Messrs A. and W. Montgomery, o£ Kirkcudbright. Scotland, was deemed worthy of first place out of the 28 draughts present on the ground. The entries, as previously mentioned, in the aged draught class were 31, but Mr James Sim's M'Callum, Mr A. M'Millan's Prince Victor, and Mr Watson. Abram's Captaiif Stewart were absent, and one of the entires — Mr George Marshall's Marconi — was withdrawn from competition owing to his having been cast in .his box , at Christchurch. He was. however, shown for exhibition only Baron Graceful, the winner in this class, is by Baron's Pride, which has a long list of wins to his credit. Baron GraoefuFs dam was Graceful. Baron Graceful, as he appeared on the show ground yesterday, presented a capital appearance, being in the pink of condition, and moving well. He has good pasterns and good feet, and moves with great freedom. He is not what might bo considered a very heavy -horse, and in this rc°pecfc might by some be thought to fall short of the requirements of the draught class. In other respects he is, however, a realJv vorv srocd draught, and Mr <T. R. Mackenzie (of Pomahaka). his owner, is to be congratulated on his win. Mr James Patrick's Pride of Newton came second. Pride of Newton is a bay horse, iusi over three yeai"s of ago. and was brerl by Messrs Crawford, of Bute, Scotland. His sire is Pride of Blacon and .his dam Orphan Princess. Like his successful rival. Baron Gracoful~hc has good pasterns and cood feet, and is possessed of good hard, flinty bone. He^is young yet, and gives promise of becoming prominent in the years that are ftefore him. Mr Samuel Young's Aitken Brae was placed third in the prize list. He is by Baron's Pride; dam Jess; is a fine big horse, but is somewhat deficient in his front action, and is slightly stiff in movement, and labours under a disadvantage. Tarn o' Shanter, owned by Mr D. Clarke, of Outram, is sived by Sandy Erskine, has secured honours at several shows in Otago and Southland, and the judges awarded him fourth place. Mr Thomas Hall's Sandy Erskino showed sufficient merit to induce tho judges to create a fifth award. He oxhibitcrl signs of wear, especially in the bocks, but was in many respects a fine stamp of animal. In draught three-year-olds the pride of place fell to Mr R. Marshall's Johnny Erskine, a well-grown colt that has, however, been a little overfed. Ho is a very bier colt of eood quality. and has srood movement for his size. Ho had, however, been rather forced in feedins:, and that mierht account for the slight; swelling of the hocks. He is by Sandy Erskine. out of Darline. Mr R. Gawn's Everlasting, by Lord Lyon, dam Rosic. was nlaced second, and is also a well-errowr* colt, but hardly &o ij-oocl in movement a* Johnny Erskine. Neither is he quite so clean in tho les nor so heavy. Twecdale. a dark bay. owned by Mr Johnston, ot Grower's "Riish, is a nice compact colt. buO rather small. He is a vcrv straight mover, Uintv ancl clean in the bone, and won third place. _, Shamrock by Wicklow, dam Pocohontasr, which secured* first place among the three carriage stallions shown, would be an ideal carnage horse if he were two inches higher He is a dark brown horse showing any amount of substance, and is compact from tho fetlock to the knee, being nice and short in the cannon. Behnont Baron, which came second, is a dark bay by Freedom, dam Barbara, and stands 16 hands 3in high. Be has taken honours on several occasions over the other side. He is long in the fetlock to the knoe, not so strong in, the bone as the first prize-taker, and is somewhat lacking in barrel. Oldenburg, a light bay. which was placed third, was not in show condition, and showed symptoms vi being a. bit dropped in the back. Bren.
dor, which was entered under trotting stallions, was changed to the hackney stallion class, and received first place without opposition, ar unnamed colt owned by Mr W. Robertson, of Pukahiki, not being present on the ground. Brendor is a dark "brown or black horse, and is a descendant of Helmet, -who in his day was a good performer on the turf. Brendor is a fair weight-carrier. In trotting stallions, Del Paso, a- bay horse by Albert" W., dam Augusta, was selected "by the judges from among the eight horses shown .for * first place. He showed a blemish, due apparently to accident, but this was not detrimental, and he was the best horse exhibited' by a good way. General Pet, a light bay -with, black points, sired^by General Tracey, out of Jenny Tracey, was .not so good a barrelled horse, and not so compact, tut- probably a horse that would get <-ood stock. His record on the turf is a good one. Hidalgo,, a- bright bay by tjjie winner, out,, of Sally, was placed third. Tie thoroughbred stallion class only produced four iiorse,s, Rosemere being selected for first honours. Rosemere is by . Westmere, dam Rosalind, is eu dark brown horse showing more- quality and substance than Lord Rosslyn, who came' second. He looks like carrying, nis 12st comfortably. He . also shows a blemish, wMch looks as 5f it might be the result of a mishap. He is a horse that was well-known in, his" racing days, arid proved himself successful,, particularly in the North Island. He was a horse' of whom a great deal was always expected, and no doubt showed a good deal of pace. ■ Lord Rosslynv by St. Olair— Lady Emmay snowed small beside Rose^ mere in ppini"bf substance, but exhibited? any amount -of quality. Desert Lights a 'grey, was, one of two exhibits in rjon.vv stallions. He loots- .likely- to get real good" stock, but sho-ws "too much - quality for those who prefer a pony of a stouter build. Sor breeding purposes it- would . be probably a question of selecting: suitable mares, fLS he' is full- q£ quality and shows a lot of Arab .breeding.
