CANTERBURY MARKETS-
CHRISTCHU&CH GRAIN AND PRODUCE
REPORT (Lyttalton 'limas, -23rd mst )
Ro-ports regarding t'ha local wh^atf market vaiy widely ir tone. On oiie hand an advanc3 of quite td per bushel on good whea'u during the iast few days is quoted, the rise m pnico being due to tJie scarcity of giain of grood to pnmie quality. On the cthei liana, it is stated thui thtie is no lmprovenifciit, and that tho recer.t quotations m this reporc are liot obtainable. .By the latter section of the trade it is held that there >s nctiuug to wjvirant tine advance of JOs per tor m fioiir. Prime wheat is undoubtedly scaice m Una market, and even gcod 1 milling quality is coining forward very sparingly. Damaged wheat is m geed demand lor fowl feed, but what are described as "slightly weathered' 1 samples, are in vei'3" dull demand. Last quotations are repeated, but really desirable lines would probably command a premium.
The improvement m the London market lor Australian wheat has not, so far, extended to New Zeal&nd descriptions.
Oats are in stxong danuand, audi with very few offering prices have hardened about lcl per bitshel all round during la&t wask.
Ths potato market is very unsettled. Rsports from Wellington state that quantities nave been received thette on consignment froru Oamaiu aoid Lyttelton, and for them greatly reduced prices on those lately nuing will ha\e to be accepted. Supplies are being offered from Sydney and else-wheore, so that the local market is decidedly weak. Probably £9 per teu would have to bs paid to farmers for immediate requirements, but under present circumstances np- important quantity coxud be sold al that price.
Local factory butler has fallen Id per lb, and dairy butter has been proportionately reduced in value.
