The Bank of England returns show the stock of gold" coin and bullion to be £34,733,000; reserve, £25,542,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 45.84. The notes in circulation total £29,487,000 ; public deposits, £11,068,000; other deposits, £43,954,000 ; Government securities, £18^676,000 ; and other securities, £29,508,000. Three months' bills are discounted at 1 15-16 per cent. Consols are quoted at £90 8s 9d. West Australian 3'» .... 89 88 J Wheat : The markets are inactive and cargoes are very quiet. Holders are asking 31s 10£ d for Australian afloat and 32s 2d for Victorian off the coast. The American visible supply of wheat is 22,404,000 bushels. Flour is dull and unchanged. Copper : Spot, £69 10s ; three months, £69 6s 3d. Tin : Spot, £149 17s 6d ; three months, £149 15s. Pig iron, 47s 4d. Butter is firm and unchanged. Danish is slightly in buyers' favour. Australian has all been cleared. Weddel's annual report states that prospects point to a higher level in prices, probably on an average 7s 6d above last season.
Sugar: First marks, 12s 4d; German, 9s lid. The Bradford wool market is very firm, and good busines is being done in all classes. Common sixties, 25£ d; supers, 26d ; forty-sixes, 18|d ; forty-sixes, 16^d. At the sheepskin sales 3060 bales were offered and sold. Compared with June rates, merino clothing combings declined and crossbred August 20. Copper: Spot, £69 17s 6d to £69 11s 6d; three months, £69 5s to £69 10s. Silver, 2s 4d per oz. Wolfram: Dull; 22s to 255. There is but little offering. Linseed oil, £20 10s. New Zealand hemp: Steady. Near arrival by steamer, £28 2s 6d. Wheat: Two Australian cargoes sold at 31s 9d to 31s lOJd respectively. Rabbits : Slow of sale. Large offered at 12a ex ship. Heavy arrivals and prospective supplies are causing holders to press sales. Frozen meat: New Zealand mutton — Canterbury, light, 4gd; North Island, 4d to 4Jd; others unchanged. Lamb — Canterbury "light, skl ; heavy, sd ; Dunedin and Southland and North Island, 5 3-16 d. New Zealand beefOx fores, 2|d ; hindquarters unchanged. River Plate sheep— Heavy, 3 7-16 d; light, 3 11-16 d. Beef — Forequarters, 2Jd; hinds, unchanged. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. MELBOURNE, August 17. At to-day's sales hides were in brisk demand, and last week's rates were fully maintained. Tallow showed -a further jise of 10s per cwt.
