'The fame of i-e Zealand Farmers fJnion is evidently spreading abroad. At me meeting of the Provincial Executive of the North Canterbury branch last week, a letter, was received from a place called Oakey, in- far-away Queensland. An application was made, for a copy of the union s rules, the writer stating that the farmers ■were ' forming a union, and desired to be *uided by the New Zealand Union's rules. fphe_executive decided to forward the rules ■with much pleasure, the Chairman remarking that imitation was the sincerest form pf flattery. „ . A meeting of the Pleasant Point branch W«6 held on the 14th inst. Mr Cleland preJided. Regarding Mr Chisholm's proposal to procure the services of a draught entire for the coming season, it was stated that 59 mares had been guaranteed, and it was suggested that offers for the lease of a horse be advertised in the leading papers in the South Island. The matter will shortly be brought up again and definite arrangements mr.de. |
The North Canterbury Executive met on (Wednesday last, Mr J. A. Parinett (president) in the chair. A. circular was received "from Mr J. -6. Wilson asking the branch to move in the matter of obtaining for the children .of New Zealand efficient,.instruction in rural education by requesting the members for the district to join with others in insisting that the Government should devote time and attention to the subject. It was resolved that the motion contained in the circular should be approved of. — A letter was received from Mr W. Jaques, the Government canning expert, stating that hie would be visiting Canterbury about September 16, and would h& plad to deliver a- lecture her© if so desired, and if the branch would select a subject and' dates. It was^ resolved to forward the letter to the . chairman of the Harewood Road branch \fc> allow him to act as he might choose.
