THE LAWRENCE-ROXBURGH RAILWAY.
MEETING AT LAWRENCE.
LAWRENCE, March 31.
The meeting convened for last evening in the Town Hall re railway extension was largely attended. Mr Jeffery (Mayor of Lawrence) was in the chair, and in a few introductory remarks informed the meeting what had been done in the past, andr showed the necessity of further efforts being made not only by residents of Lawrence, but by inducing the co-operation of the business men of Dunedin to work against the influence of the Southland people, who are endeavouring to capture the Otago ana country trade, in urging the extension of the Edievale railway to Roxburgh. The Secretary (Mr J. C. Arbuckle) stated that he was in correspondence with gentlemen in Dunedin who were interesting themselves strongly in the matter of railway extension to Roxburgh, and that h# expected to hear within the jiext few daya of a strong combination being' formed thereThe meeting appointed a sub-committee 1 , consisting- of the Mayor, Messrs B. Winn, F. Oudaille,. R. Pilling, jun., and J. U Arbuckle, to take what steps they considered advisable to counteract the efforts of the Southland people, and with powec to arrange for a joint deputation from Dunedin. Roxburgh, and Lawrence to proceed! to Wellington as soon as the session, of. Parliament opens. It was further resolved to invite representatives from Dunedin and Roxburgh to hold a conference at Lawrence with the sub-committee appointed, so that a schema might be formulated for strong concentrated action being taken as early as possible.
A large number of new members joined? the league, and a sub-committee was appointed to enrol and receive subscriptions from others wishing to join. The meeting was a most enthusiastic one, and the general feeling- her© is that' residents will succeed in getting a vote placed on the Estimates during the coming- session to commence the section authorised by Parliament — viz., from Lawrence to Beaumont,
