GAMES.

The third game played between F. J. Marshall (White) and D. Janowski (Black) in the match afc the Gercle Philidor, Paris : —

Queen's Gambit Declined.

(a) A modification of the valuation introduced by Pillsbury at the Hastings tournament, Kt-K 5, before castling, and ever since innumerable vaiiations have been tried. At this sta^e the move is distinctly bad. (b) "White has already the inferior game, practically an isolated pawn at X 5, Black having two bishops.

(c) The Xt at Q 6 serves no other purpose than to remain with the bishops of differeat colour if Black were good enough to take it cff.

(d) The alternative would be 21 P-B 4 or Kt-B 4. The text move i& extremely unsatisfactory.

(c) The game really commences now. Black sacrifices a pawn temporarily for attack and position.

(F) 22 R x B, P x R; 23 R-Q ], P x P, 24 P x P. B x KtP; 25 R x P would be equally bad, Black remaining with two poweiful passed pawns. (g) If 30 P x P, th»n 31 Kt-B 4 eh. followed by Xt x B, with slightly better chances for a draw, especially as the Xt,, as it stands, has no scope whatever. (h) The move xeally makes no difference, as Black could get the passed pawn whenever he chooses (i) Foiced, otherwise B-B 6. (j) White has no move after this excei^t ."K, or Xt, either move losing.

Appended is fh<> fifth game in the content "between F J. Marshall (White) and D. Janowski (Black)— Queem's Gambit decltxf.d.
