REPORTS FROM WORKING DREDGES.

The secretary of the Paterson's Freehold Company reports the following returns for last -week: — No. 1 dredge. 260z for 124 hours' work; No. 2 dredge, 19oz 15dwt for 131 hours' "work.

The secretary of the TTgapa-ra No. 3 Company reports a return of 7oz for 120 hours' work. The dredgemaster states that the prospects are improving.

The secretary of the Waimumu Queen Company reports a return of 20oz 7dwt for 117 hours' dredging.

The cleaning up of the Local Industry's paddock at the middle of last week gave' a further 18oz, making a total of 53Joz for about three weeks' elevating, y

The secretary of the Lady Annie Company Teports a return of 420z sdwt for 136 hours' •work.

The secretary o f the "Waikaia Company reports a return of 260z 13dwt for 131 hours' work.

The manager of the Undaunted sluicing claim reports having washed up for a return of 90oz as the result of eight week's work. He also wired that the water supply was very short. t

The Manuherikia dredgemaster reports having washed up for a return of 440z for 180 hours' work. He also wired : " Everythingworking well; drift a little troublesome; liver up a few inches to-day. '

The return from the Nugent Wood dredge this week is 12oz 15dwt. The clay still proves heavy and troublesome, but the dredgemaster „ is looking forward to an improvement in the nature of the ground in the course of another week or two.

The New Fourteen-mile Beach dredgemaster reports having washed up for a return of 114oz 4dwt for 192 hours' work. He also •wired that everything was working well. The secretary of the Majestic Company leTjorts a return of 290z for 177 horus' work. 6Phe drec%e is now at work in the river. A return of 14oz lOdwt is reported from the Three-mile (Greenstone Creek) dredge for 120 hours' work last week. The dredgemaster wired that the ground was partly bottomed. The secretary of the Waikaka United Company reports a return of 30oz 3dwt from the Ho. 2 dredge for 124 hours' work. There was jio wash-up on .the No. 1 drecifee, owing to

new sleeves aad corner plates being put on the lower tumbler.

The .New "Roxburgh Jubilee dredgemaster reports having washed up for a return of 260z lOdwt as the restllt of 138 hours' work. drift was troiiDiesome. The master of the Bignell's No Town dredge reports having washed! up for a return of 3±oz 3dwt as a "result of 123 hours' work. He also wired that there was a flood in the creek, but that the dredge was safe. The secretary of the Enfield Company reports a return of 16oz ldwt for 133 hours' work. The ground worked was much about the same as in the previous week, and was from 6ft to 15ft deep. The bottom consisted of rock, and was very hard. The secretary of the Roxburgh Amalgamated Mining and Sluicing Company advises a return of 950z lOdwt 6gr, chiefly the result of the working for the latter part of March. The manager reports that he has now before him a face of gcod wash. THE WEEK'S DREDGING RETURNS. During tha week ended Monday, April 3, returns were reported from the following 47 dredges, the total yield being 13040s 19dwt 3gr, or an average of 27 0z per dredge : — Oz. dwt. sr.

SUPPOSED IMPORTANT DISCOVERY. WELLINGTON, April 3. What is believed to be an important discovery has beei made in the Wilberforce district in the ranges behind Hokitika. A party of men, with capital behind it, has been prospecting there for some months, and the Government has assisted to the extent of making tracks through the bush. This morning the Premier received the following telegram from R. Hyndman, a member of the party: — "After five- months' graft struck a reef at Wilberforce 15ft across. No sign of the hanging wall ypt. One hundred and thirty feet below the outcrop. Everything looks well."
