REPORTS FROM WORKING DREDGES.

The secretary of the Paterson's Freehold Company reports the following returns for last -week: — No. 1 dredge. 260z for 124 hours' work; No. 2 dredge, 19oz 15dwt for 131 hours' "work.

The secretary of the TTgapa-ra No. 3 Company reports a return of 7oz for 120 hours' work. The dredgemaster states that the prospects are improving.

The secretary of the Waimumu Queen Company reports a return of 20oz 7dwt for 117 hours' dredging.

The cleaning up of the Local Industry's paddock at the middle of last week gave' a further 18oz, making a total of 53Joz for about three weeks' elevating, y

The secretary of the Lady Annie Company Teports a return of 420z sdwt for 136 hours' •work.

The manager of the Undaunted sluicing claim reports having washed up for a return of 90oz as the result of eight week's work. He also wired that the water supply was very short. t

The return from the Nugent Wood dredge this week is 12oz 15dwt. The clay still proves heavy and troublesome, but the dredgemaster „ is looking forward to an improvement in the nature of the ground in the course of another week or two.

SUPPOSED IMPORTANT DISCOVERY. WELLINGTON, April 3. What is believed to be an important discovery has beei made in the Wilberforce district in the ranges behind Hokitika. A party of men, with capital behind it, has been prospecting there for some months, and the Government has assisted to the extent of making tracks through the bush. This morning the Premier received the following telegram from R. Hyndman, a member of the party: — "After five- months' graft struck a reef at Wilberforce 15ft across. No sign of the hanging wall ypt. One hundred and thirty feet below the outcrop. Everything looks well."
