Assisted Tjy 'his stable mate, Nightfall, for tho first five furlongs Grand Rapids covered a> rc-ilo in lrnin 44sec, while Mr Stead's other pair — Haitian and Cruciform — did 10 furlongs in 2rain 13isee, tho last mile taking lrnlr* •46sec in each case — a Teco-rd being established. SYDNEY, September 5. Martian and ~ Cruciform did useful work on • the tracks, going once iound in 2min 35sec, and running the last furlong -as -strongly as at - the commencement. Gladsome covered a, -mile in lmin 47sec, and-Koopan put in a .fine gallop once Tound in 2min.33Jseo on the tan. Grand Rapids went great guns for seven furlongs,, compassed in lmin 39£ sec. Betting was" brisk this evening. Cher© Amie, for a long time favourite for the Epsom Handicap, .gave way to ITanious, who hardened to 5 "to 1. Grand Rapids has .been fluctuating a good deal lately. x On July 13 Messrs Denny and Brothers launched at Dumbarton the steel turbine steamer L<has3a, which -vessel is classed by the British -Corporation, and also at Lloyd's. She is the first of four turbine steamers "building for the British-India Steam- Navigation Company's colonial trade. The principal dimensions are: — Length, 275 ft; "breadth, 44ft; depth, 25ft 6in. She is , of the poop, bridge, and forecastle type, having accommodation for first class passengers in -the bridge, for Becond class in the poop, and for crew in the forecastle. As the ship has fine lines, being intended to maintain -a high rate of speed, there i 3 f>nly a limited amount of cargo capacity,, the turbines -will bo supplied by the. Parsons Marine ~Steam Tu-rbm& Corjrpany, -while- the boilers and -other propelling machinery will, bo supplied by Messrs Denny, and Co., Dumbarton.
