ALBURY (South Canterbury.)
February 8. — The weather for some time past has been very hot in<!l dry. Warm northwest winds have been severe on ripened and ripening crops. On Friday last about 2 o'clock a very severe hailstorm occurred in the northern part of the district. Its track was only about a mile wide. Within this area considerable damage was done to the grain crops and to the orchards. Vivid lightning and heavy thunder were prevalent throughout tho whole district. Beyond slight damage to some of the wire fences not much injury froaii this cause has been reported. Harvest.— Cutting 15 well advanced on n;oat farms, while some of the earliest crops aia aheadly m the stack. The jield pi onuses tcx be about the average. "No better guide for this purpose than the Havy League map could be obtained. Church Mccl ■ ? — Th annual meeting of the Presbyterian C uich took place at the end of last monlih. 'Iliere was a very large attenofence of members and their friends from all parts of the district. The repoits from the various organisations, and ths balance slieols cisolosed satisfactory progress, winch reflects credit on Dr Wm Black, the minister, art! his office-bearers. Cirouß-.— For the first time in the history of tho eottlument Albury received a visit irom a circus. Needless to say the younger members of the community, accompanied by their parents turned out in large numbers to witness *ac performance. Settlement. The maps, plans, and i?gu!ations in connection -with the subdivision of ftbout 40,000 acres of the Levels Estate are now available. Tho rentals in this vicinity ->-ary from 2s 7d for the small glazing runs to 0s 6d Sor claory farms. There is sure to be a large number of competitors for tie majority oi the sections. The ballot takes place early in March, and possession will be given on tLe first of April. The Premier's Visit. — Albury residents were disappointed last Saturday on the receipt of intelligence that the Premier could not, owing to some unforeseen ciroumstajioes pay the district a visit. Extensive preparations had been made by numbers to give the right hon. gentleman a suitable reception. Mr S. R. liutherford had made arrangements to entertain iho Premier and drive him through the district. We learn, however, that the visit is only delayed, as Mt Seddon proposes to be hcie in the early part of next month.
