John Skene and Son report under date February i as follows — Experienced active harvesters arc fairly plentiful this season. The majority of them, howevei, prefer going north, where the harvest it earlier and wager are higher. Ploughmen, milkers, flaxmill hands are very scarce, but shou 1 d soon get more plentiful. We are experiencing just a slight slackness prio. tc harvesting operations starting generally in Otago. We quote wages as follows : — Bindei workers and stackers 50s ; general harvesters Canterbury, Is per hour; Otago, 9c? and lOd ; ploughmen, 22s 6d, 255, with bonus of from £2 to £8 ; contract stookers and forkers, 2s 9d to 3s 6d per acre ; threshing mill hands, 9d pel hour; milkers, 15s, 17s 6d, 20s, C2s 8d ; flaxmil) hands, 53 to 7 r per day ; hotel grooms and porters, 17s 6d , waiters, 255 ; harvest cooks, 25 to 50s ; tation cooks-bakers, 255, 30s ; station blacksmiths, 30s ; housekeepers, 15s, 17s 6d.
