DEMAND FOR OATEN HAY.
LONDON, January 27. The War Office is inviting tenders for 1050 or 2100 tons of Australian pure oaten hay, to be delivered at Port Elizabeth or Durban. The produce must be aboard a steamer by the middle of February. MELBOURNE, January 27. The Agent-general is asking for quotations for 2100 tons of Australian oaten hay, delivered at Port Elizabeth and Durban. WELLINGTON, January 29. The Department of Industries and Commerce has leceived the following cablegram from the Agent-general, dated London, 27th: — " War Office is prepared to consider offers for the supply of 1050 or 2100 tons of oaten hay, at a price, delivered, including cost of freight and insurance, at Port Elizabeth or Durban. The hay must be "packed in bales, securely bound with a strong wire, and weighing 1001b each bale, subject to Government inspection as regards weight, quality, and condition. Shipment by steamer not later than February 14, and no portion to be carried on deck. The freight on oaten hay, pressed in bales, to the two porta above-mentioned (fixed under Government contract), is 37s 6d per ton of 50 cubic feet."
The Department of Industries and Commerce has arranged with the New Zealand and African Steamship Company to offer space to intending tenderers for the supply of the hay required by the War Office for Sotith Africa in the steamer Norfolk, loading next month, and to give a special rebate of 5s per ton of 22401b off the schedule rates of freight.
