THE MOUNTAIN GORGE.
Ye crags of adamant, ye towering cliffs, Prolonging torrent thunders evermore, About ye steal the silvery mists to veil The dark tobara with il« tender light, And from your dark recesses rnuimurs down The crystal streaml?t through th. mossy
stones. Ye stilly desolations, we become Parts of your primal grandeur, finding here A beauty that will never pass away. And, drinking of that beauty, we become Children of immortality, for here We find the sumnium pulchrum — humble trust In Him who moveth by mysterious ways To lift us from ora narrow, sordid selves To the grandeur of His everlasting hills. I cannot think that God will lose us in The botmdlesslpss of His infinity ; Rather that each retains throughout all time Freewill, and human faculty that co The Highest might be worshipped', loved,
adored, And! living for His countless creatures find Guerdon of glorious praise.
Lone Torrent, lift Thy rumble to the solitary crags, And muimur doA'ii by shacl'ecl, ferny delLs. I may not lose myself in the infinite, 1 wait His fuller purpose, sorrowing O'er many follies past and finding here Patience and penitence and grand repose. The tender lights of even and dawn have beer About ye since tho birth of time, but I, A wanderer, lose myself a little uhile Beneath your sombre shades to lealise That man must climb eternally; no rcs>* Save on the awful solituct" of crags Unsealed before, whence further crags are seen, Cloud-girt, ascending to the gates of Heaven. . — Charles Oscar Palmer. Kalukitea whare, January 24.
