Glorious weather prevailed for the first day of the sixth Australasian Athletic Championship meeting, held on the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon. A light breeze blew across the track. The attendance was only moderate. Simpson, the New Zealand champion, was present during the afternoon, but had not recovered from his vaccination, troubles to warrant his starting to-day. He hopes to be able to start in the three-mile event on Monday. Results: — PUTTING 16lb WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.

He states that Mie feels well, and anticipates winning the Halffiile on Monday. .Ross collapsed after the Three-mile Walk. Simp Eon is improving rapidly. Laurie twice slipped in jumping, which somejjpliat unnerved him. Smdth won tih-e Hurdles magnificently, and >as greatly applauded. The crowd was absolutely impartial. The ground was somewhat dead after the Recent rains, and no new records were established. Though entered none of the competitors competed at the A.N.A. sports on Saturday night.
