The Pahiatua Racmg Club had .a most successful meeting this week, and will come out £600 or £700 ahead of it. The weather was fine on both days, and the attendance laige. The totaiisator ttnnoxer amounted to £12,428, which is £2357 more than last yeai. The Petone-tramed Lissa showed great improvement on hiG Lower Valley and FoxtOL form, winning as es=ily on the secorxi day as on the hist. Alias iling m:giit have given trouble had she stood up on the first csv. Vallance (Comfort's sistei) was making her first appearance. She struck a fence hard and was not brought out on the second daj . The Hutt-trameci Benefactoi brought off a big emprise in the Cup, vhich lesulted m a great finish between half a dozen. Roseshoot disappointed his connections both Jays. Fleka was biought down for the big e\ent on the second day, and ran well, but was beaten by Freelanw (Wonderland, — Mystery), who w?s right in it on the first day. Mr George Hunter also won i* double with Tattle Whisper), who finished like her clam u=ed to do in Walter Clifford's hands. Another doublp winner was Bounce, who is useful m ceitam company. Goldwai dud not act so well on the second day as on the first, but Cap ii let did better.
The chairman of the Racing Conference has objected to the name Tangawai, and Mr Dugaid Thomson will have tc choose another for the Mahaki— Waihau fiLy.
W. Youiig, who had hit leg broken while ridimg at the Carterton meeting last November, made a quick recovery «nd was riding at the Pahiatua meeting this- week.
Mr H. M'Manaway, of Carterton, o;vner of Apprentice, this week bought a full sister to that hoise from Mr Watt lor 50gs. She is three years old, and broken.
C. Jenkins was m good form at the Pahiatua meeting this week, wheie he lode five winners.
The Wellington Cup rneetmg will result in a piofit of between i.700 and £800.
Pokeka is making a good lecovery norn the injures received while galloping at" the Hutt, but will be unable to fulfil he^ Toranaki jigagernents.
.During the Pahiatua meeting A. Peters sold The Guesser to Du^aid Thomson, and the Enchanter gelding accompanied Vigoro and Tangawai back to Fordell. The pi ice is said to be £300, -at which the chestnut is weJl sold. He is probably intended for hurdle racing. On the n.ght of the first day of the Pahiatun meeting Mi E. J. Watt disposed of the Torpedo filly Spoil to Mr C. B. Pharazyu for £150. She made her appearance in her new owner's colours on the second day, but failed to score. She a-ccompanied Good Intent back to Tauherimkau.
The brothers A. and J. Hall fought out a finish in the Hurdle Race on the second day o: the Pahiatua meeting. The former has had a good run lately with Fakir, Australasian, and Lis^a.
Mr E. J. Watt's Tradewmc*i and Roseshoot are undlsr offer. The former is intended foi hurdle racing m Australia.
The Duchess, who ran seco.iil in the Scurry at Pahiatua is a pony mars by Emerald or Padlock — Governess, and consequently closely related to Jane Eyre and Key. Mr M'Clure, owner of Duchess, slso has a two-year-old colt by Aurum — Ocean (sistei to The Harvester). The pair are to be trained at Hawera.
Frceland could have been purchased before he v.'on at Pahialua foa £200, at which he should have been a cheap hoise.
B. Olivei scored his first important win on Beiicfactor in the Pahiatua Cup.
D. Wright served the stewards, with a notice not to pay over the stakes to Mi B&covitch.
Valkyrie was submitted tc auction at the Foxton and Pahiatua meetings, but failed to find a new owner.
Catspaw appears well in the Mile Hack Race at Taranaki in a weak field.
The best-looking of the Crpckshots seen out fo far is Vigoro, who is from Hoyden, a member of the Scu'-wester-Romp family, to which Pills and Tomboy belong. He was recently purchased from his breeder (Mr A. Cameron) for 200gs, by T. Bevan^f Manakau. He jr.ado his first appearance in his new owner's colours at Pahiatua, and scored in good style, but was not started on the second day. Vigoro is trained by F. Tilley, who has turned out about 20 winners this season.
Tradewmd has been under offer for 300gs and if sold, will probably be taken to Australia for hurdle racing. Roseshoot is also for sale at a reasonab'e price.
A number of visitors from the West Cosst were present at ths Pahiatua meeting last week, including Mr J. R. Macdonald (president of Horow hernia Racing Club), Mi H Gillies, and Mr L. A. Abiaham (of Manawatu Racing Club).
Toibrina is riot toe good on his pins, and fell on the first d-ay of the Pahiatua meeting. Young Oliver was -not hurt, and .rodb Benefactor to victory in th. Cvp — the- next race on the C3rd.
P. Hisgott considered it advisable not to strrt Torbrina on the second day.
The Pahiatua Racing Club wiU consider the advisability of having the starting machine at its next meeting.
The programme for the Upper Hutt Tiotting Club's first meeting, to be held on May 21. is as follows — Maicler Handicap, of ISsovs, twe miles; Trentharr Handicap, of 25sovs, one miie and a-half ; Local Msndisn Handicap, of lOsovs, lone mile; Hutt Trotting Cub Handicap, of 40sovs, two miles (for horses that can do 5.40 or betterh Okatirawa Handicap, of 15sovs, two miles; Mungaroa Tiotting Handi-cap,-of 20sovs, one mile (for hoises that can do 2.50 or better).
