SECOND DAY.

The attendance on tho second day shewed a plight improvement on that of tho first day, but opeculation was again \ery meagre. A very bad 'tr.rt was effected in the Stewards' " Handicap, and Goldspur obtained several lengths' advantage, wlv-l^t Bcaley was badly left. The form-er had no difficulty in winning; after his break, and was followed home by Redstart and Tonc-y. Kea had an easy victory in the Farmers' District Handicap ; and Yeoman had no great difficulty in accounting for the Tvtjjmile Trot after dispo-jng of Nor=e Quecu, whioh had led over the first part of the r?e> . Southerly Buster scored comfortably in. the Racing Club Handicap. Hypnotist led over the first throe furlongs of the race, but thon retired and dropped back out of the fray. The winner drew to the front at four furlongs from home, and aftorwards s?ikd home full of running. The Handicap Selling Raco produced a field of two, which gave punters a bit of a to^k in endeavouring to find cut which of the two- was most worthy of support. Lynx, a 15-year-old oon of Le Loup, looked tho best to the eye, and Orient, a son of Occident and a St. Claii mare (who is also tho dam cf Koputai), presented a grass-bellied appearance, which did not suggest that he was able to run over five furlongs at racing prce. TheTe was no hotting on the machine, but for bookmakers Lynx had the call over h.ia opponent. The favourite began the best, but Orient, mainly owing to the ene<rgetio riding of T. Minahan, got on term-s at ihe foot of the straight and won by a loncrth. He was returned to his owner after the raco at £13. Goldspur got badly left m the Flying Stokes, and lost several lcngtlis at the 6tart. Cairn shot away from the others, but at the home turn ran wide, and in the run home he waa beaten, by Toney. Turgeniff came with a good iun, and finished close up third, whilst Goldspur was not porsever-ed with after a ocup'.e of furlongs had been run. The Farewell Trot gave E. M'Kowen his sc-cond winning ride at the meeting, and it was principally owing to his horsemanship that Rocket overhauled Dreyfus and--baat the latter in tho run home. A field of four saddled up in the Final Welter, and Bcaley hopped off the mark md won after leading all the way. This brought to a conclusion the poorest meeting ever heJcl at Tapanui, and the club's ledger will «how a larcre- <iebit"balance over the gathering, which fact may be instrumental in killing tho spoTt in tiiot part of tho world.
