Notes from Wetherstones.

(From Otjb, Own Cobeespondent.)

WETHERSTONES, January 25. At the final cleaning up of the last paddock on Monday, the 18th mst., the manager of the Golden Crescent got 370z 9dwt. Tins includes the amalgam from last year's, blowing, making a total of 81oz 9d\vt since December 7. The manager commenced elevating another paddock on the 21st mst. The hot weather is drying up the water. The manager is able to elevate only two or three hours in a shift of eight hours, and in the other part of the shirr the water is stopped in a small dam, called Riddeli's dam, at the head oi the pipes. It is the directors' intention to go along the line of race, and if possible, find a gully or suitable place for a reservoir. This would greatly help them, even if the reservoir would only hold a week's water. I think it would help them if they would offer a reward of, say, £5 to anyone who would find a sue foi them They could then examine the place themselves to ascertain if it was suitable.

It is not often that 'iheip is a deal in Golden Crescent shares, but a Lawrence resident stiuck a patch p. i'er-- weeks ago He boughs a parcel of 100 shades at the satisfactory price, to him, of £1 I9s 6d Shortly after the transaction he was offered 2s 6d per share on his bargain. Several oihe? parties wotild have bought, and given more, had they been aware the parcel was for sale. The purchaser got the transfer

t, day or two before the declaration of the last dividend^ which he likewise got. At a- meeting of the directors of the Local Industry Company, held on the 19th in3t. for the appointment of a manager for the mine, Sir G-. Dunnet was chosen out of several applicants. The meeting passed off quietly, and .occupied little time. Up to Saturday night the »€w manager had npt taken, charge. He is busy fit present in putting up new fluming at the fcead of one of the Bluei Spur races. There has been no wash-down, in the Local Industry claim yet.

February 1. The manager of the Local Industry washed Bown a few boxes last Saturday, and obtained 13oz 9dwt. It was a fine sample of gold. This is the first wash-down since the present manager took oharge, a few ounces having been got before. He expects to finish the paddock soon, -as there is some bottom to clean yet. There was no work done in the Golden Chrescent mine last week, as they had to stop for want of water. There is a probability of the manager making 1 a start at elevating this morning. The chairman and two other directors .were out on the race one day last week searching for a convenient place for a dam. I understand they found one or two suitable sites, where a small dam could be built — large enough to hold a few days' water, and even that would \>e better than none.
