The Dunedin Jockey Club commenced its annual winter meeting at Wingatw yes-l-er-day, and although the day was fine there was 9 cold sou'-wLGter blowing, which made the shelter of the grand stand very acceptable. Those who were undeterred by the ■wintry aspect of the day and patronised the club's gathering were rewarded by witnessing come of th» finest snort that has ever taken place on the course. Prominent among«t those on the lawn was Sir .1. G. Ward, i who was an interested spectator during portion of the afternoon. Tho Hon. George M'Lean, the club's "president, was, as usual, a very noticeable figure on the stewards' stand, and amongst other prominent officials of the club present -were noticed Messrs J. Mills, A. E. 8. Carr, W. J. Coughlan, J. Haztett, G. B. Bullock, J. Sinclair Thomson, S. S. Myers, AY. H. Taggart, R. Ewing j (vsho displayed hie verdicts ivibh commendI able promptitude), and A. O Hanlon, who j took hie place on tho stewards' stand for the i first time. Dr Stanley Batchelor, the newlyappointed hon. eiirgeon to tho club, was also present throughout the day. Amongst th« visitors, Mr J. B. Reid, the well known Canterbury breeder and sportsman, and Mr J. l'\ Roid, of the Eld-erslie stud, were 'conspicuous figuxee. Messrs J. F. Buchanan, 31. The going was very holding, and com© of the horses did not act up to their best form, owing to the sticky nature of the ground. Mr H. Speculation over the first throe racM wa« not very brisk, but afterwards punters opened out and tho betting on the balance of the card proved a decided improvement. Skagway began badly in a good start, and Narcissus and Almanac were the first to break the line. Racing round the first turn Casque assumed command, and going a!ong the back gradually increased his lead to about fouc lengths as he passed the four-furlong post. Narcissus lying second, and Juniper and Almanac lyang next, with the others strung out. Turning into the straight Casque further increased his lead, and Narcissus was being hard ridden as they approached the distance post. Casque ran home an easy winner by eight lengths from Narcissus, who defeated Juniper by a- short length for second place; Almanao fourth and "Western Bell last. Time, linin 52 l-ssec. Racing for the straight Lolah, led Rod Gauntlet by about two lengths, and approaching the distance post Tsaritsa, Red Gauntlet, and Vladimir (the latter ot the rails) all made their efforts. A somewhat crowded finish ensued, and Red Gauntlet was the first to shoot his bolt. Fifty yards from home Tsaritsa had Lolah and Vladimir beaten, bub Scylla, coming with a- late run on tho extreme outside, got up and won cleverly by a long neck from the Oamaru mare; Lolah the same tlistanco off, third, a shoTt head in front of Vladimir; Red Gauntlet next, and Petrovna last Time, lmin 21 l-ssec. Dividend, £7 14s. Second Day. — Saturday. Tho Dunedin Jockey Club held the second diy of their winter meeting on the Wingatui course on Saturday. Tho day was sunny, but cold, and the lawn and the outside paddock were very wet, while tho course was heavy, becoming worso aa it got cut up late in tho afternoon. Tho attendance of the public wao not large. The totulipator business was brisker than on the second day of last year's meetii.g; indeed, the meeting as a whole w»3 more successful from a speculator's point of view, aa the following totalisator investment!* will ahow —1902: First day, £3507; second day, £3741 lCs;— total, £7248 10s. 1903: First <Ja,y, £4686; second day, £'3750 10s,— total. £8436 10s; or aji increase for t!>n two days of £1188. The excellent finishes witnessed in several of the events furnished evidence cf the gocd judgment of the handicapper (Mr J. E. Hcrryj). In the luvermay Welter there were 11 starters, ami in the Hurdle Race seven, and the .iverapp i.i;mbr>r of starters for the d»y was six. In two events dividends v/ero paid upon tho fir-?t ai.d second horses, that upon Juniper in tho Inv^r.hay Welter being tho largest payout of the far.
