WELLINGTON NOTES.

By Oslookxs.

May 2. Shrapnel declined his Hawera Cup engagement.

C. Jenkins increased his winning account to 75 at the Manawatu meeting.

The racehorses Regulation, Pukana, and Ki|. larney returned from the West Coast on Saturday last in charge ot A. Attwood. They will winter at Palmerston North.

Forty-six entries of present yearlings have been received for the Wairarapa Hack Guineas, 1904. The list includes a daughter of Selma, who won the first race in 1894; a half-sister to Westerley, who scored in 1901 ; and a- fullbrother to last year's winner, Betsy. At +he blood stock sale at Pfdmerston on Friday, a yearling sister to Gold Dust was passed in at 91gs, and a private offer of 130gs was refused. A bay gelding, by Douglas— Karamea, by Piscatonous — May Queen, brought 46gs. Donald Fraser bought a two-year-old filly by Torpedo— Parlour Maid for 80gs. W. Davis gave 59gs for a brown filly by The Officer— Taihoa. Dr Newm?n got a bay filly by The Possible — Hine te Po for 65ga. Of the horses in training, Tiv/ha, by The Officer — Spot, and Victoiy, by Dreadnought — Victrix, each brought 40ga. The Lakeshell gelding Novelty was passed in at 102gs.

J. Maher arrived from Sydney on Tuesday last with the thoroughbred stock purchased by Mr C. F. Moore, of Wanganui. The newcomers consist of four brood mares, three yearlings, and a filly foal. The stud matrons are Guiding Star (Ca'rna— Starlight), Mariana (Navigator — Lady Fanny), Mantilla (Goldsbrough—Signora), and Mantlepiece (Manton— Mantle). The latter mare is the dam of Muffler, who scored in the Nursery Handicap at the Hawkesbury meeting last month. The filly foal that formed one of the new arrivals is a- ifull sister to Muffler. Guiding Star and Mariana- were both mated with Dorchester 1-tSill of Portland — Wood Nymph), while Mantilla and Mantlepiece have both visited Jolly Hampton (Merry Hampton — Cliff). The yearlings comprise a brace of fillies and a colt, the latter being by Haut Brion from Rufirce. One of the fillies is by Vie—Antaeus, and the other by Impetus — Margot.

Beautiful putumn weather was experience for the meeting of the Hanawatu Racing Club, held on Wednesday and Thursday la3t. Notwithstanding that the enclosures were overrun with all kinds of persons anxious to "lay the double," the club had a most successful meeting — the last one on the old course. The Christmas meeting will be held on the new course, which is private property, and the club will therefore have no more of the bookmaker nuisance. The gate receipts amounted to £100 more than last autumn, and the totalisator receipts showed an increase of £2014 compared with the meeting held a year ego. The Stepmak marc Livonia scored somewhat unexpectedly in the Flying, and returned her supporters £10 14a. The distance of the Maiden Hack Race, one mile, found Stepson out. The son of Stepniak and Britomarte has grown into a fine horse. Gold Mine, by Gold Reef — Nil Desperandum, should have won. but C. Jenkins's horsemanship got Tom Flynu home, by Mr C. A. Loi'ghnan, a vice-president of the club. Otao, by Haere — Shayshot, who shaped wel l at Feilding, won the Hack Hurdles after a good finish with Ra-nui. Ten horses contested the Racing Club Handicap. Menura, favoured with a light weight, led into the straight, but the last quarter found her out. The favourite, Motor, was right in it at a mile and a-qucxter, but failed to come on, and finished sixth. Float took charge in the straight, and won by about a length from Plaidie, who finished generously in Jenkins s hands. Gold Dust was a good fourth, and Volley, who came with «. great rattle when she got out of the ruck, fifth. The jumpers at the meeting were a very ordinary lot. On the first day the black Sou'-woster gelding Kaiwhakaroa put down a good favourite m Midia, a game pony, who would probably beat anything of her inches in the co'ory Midia is trp.med by F. Tilly, of stable Kaiwhakaroa was formerly a member. The latter is row jwned and trained by R. Guildford. On the second day Kaiwhakaron ws« favourite but the shorter distance suited Midia, who paid the good price of £4 8"5 in four runners. Mr E. J. Watt, who qwns Float, also scored with Roseshoot in the Hack "Welter. Jenkins's mount was sent out favourite, and was being shaken up half a mile from home, but the brother to Fenrose, Primula, and Bush Rose won comfortably at the finish. J. Pine rode a good race on Seaweed, but the Blenheim gelding waa not good enough In the Borough Handicap Betsy put up lOib penalty for winning a hack race at the Hutt Thfit did rot stop the daughter of Euroclydon, who won in gcod style from Mi'sspl. She paid the gTcat price of £6 8s in a field of five. Before winning the race at the Hult Betsy was Eo'd by Henare Reweti to J. Anderson. Both names are assumed by patrons of H. Fletcher. Mr Anderson had no luck with Stepma or Dodona, and has since refused £200 foi Betsy. Betsy and Livonia accepted for the Farewell Handicap on the second day. but neither was sUrted. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's colours were carried successfully by Repulse, by St. Andrew— Dryad, in the Flying Hack Handicap. He is a f.Te-year-old gelding, ard won comfortably from Mataku, with the unlucky Waitoti in the other place. Black Squall (by Somnus), a half-sister to Shrapr>el, was among the runners. The Flying Handicap on the second day looked a good thing for Repulse, but he ran all over the straight when Davis hit him for the first time, and was beat-en by Matuku, who paid the good price of £5 14s. Waitoti again ran into a place. For some reason or other Mongonui was made favourite for the Fitzherbert Handicap, but she could only get fourth. The Palmerston trained Mussel put down Livonia, and scored a v.-ell-de-served win. In the Hack Hurd'.ei Rpgs re-

peated his Feilding performance by running nowhere- on the first day and winning on tho second He was better backed in the race he won. The place-getters the first day ran consistently, finishing immediately behind the winner. Oingo (Jenkins's mount) was mads favourite for the Autumn Handicap. He failed to finish closer than seventh. After bolting a mile and a-quarter Legion of Honour cut out the running for a mile, where Plaidie, Oingo, and Float were well up. At the distance Gold Dust and Menura shot out, and at 100 yards from tho post Volley came with a great break on the outside and just got up. C. Jenkins's mount again carried most support in the Hack Handicap. This was Rosesaoot, who won comfortably. With Betsy out and meeting Mussel on 171b better terms, the Farewell Handicap looked a fair thing for Shackle. Warwick, who ran much better than he had done the previous day, or ct Feilding, was only overhauled in the last bit. Shackle won by a. length, and Mongonui got second place in the last stride. Only eight of the 16 entries for the Scurry Trent to the post. Sergius wa3 favourite, but had the bad luck to again get left at the po3t Kohima, by Apremont — Whisper, a three-year-old sister to Kowhcte, won from Louie.
