OWAKA.
Mr.y 1. — We have had more than a week of splendid weather, and most of the grain is in stack, and ready for the thresher, much to the farmer's satisfaction and gain. Of course, owing to the late season, some of the crops are not yet in, but should May prove fine, as it occasionally doss, all will be in good order. To-night a misty rain is falling, which looka as if it might continue for a few days. School Committee Election.— Owing to the very unsatisfactory way in which things have been progressing for some time past, the householders, seeing that a change was very necessary, turned out in full force on Monday night last, and, with the exception of two, elected a new committee. I trust the newmembers will see to things in general, and more particularly to the sanitary arrangements of the school, which have been so much neglected of late. With the scarlet fever which is going about surely we cannot be too particular over this matter. lam pleased to notice that the board are about to erect a, new residence for the teacher, Mr Bryant, who has been our head teacher here for the pasjl 18 years, and dtiring that time I am sure his only fault (if fault it be) has been his great kindness and leniency to the children, under his care. I trust Mr Bryant and his largo family may spend Other 18 years in the new 1 residence and greatly enjoy the comfort it may give ium. There were quite a. number of applicants for the position of head mistress to our school, among them being an M A. and * 8.A., but the committee, ovidently thinking these count for nothing, chose Miss Crofts for the position, and that lady, I believe, commences her duties here on Monday next. 1 Social. — Our Baptist friends are making extensive preparations for their nnnual Sunday School social, and, if rumour speaks true, v/e may expect something out of the usual on the 13th of the present month, the date set I lor the entertainment.
