The Wellington Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Hutt Park.

(Photos by Schaef, Sarony.)

(See article "A New Beast and an Old Deity," elsewhere in this issue). The Okapi, a beautifully coloured animal as large as a stag, was re-dis-covered in the dense forest region of the Uganda Protectorate by Sir Harry Johnston some two years ago. It appears to have been familiarly known to the Egyptian people of 5000 years since, but to have escaped the notice of all succeeding civilisations up to the present. It is described by authorities as a link between giraffes and horned cattle.

On the occasion of the Hon. J. Chamberlain's visit to South Africa, this group of Masai warriors gathered to greet him upon his arrival in Nairobi, after landing in British East Africa. Mr Chamberlain travelled over m ost of the railway 'between Mombasa and Lake Victoria Nyanza. He was much struck with the beauty of the country, and its great agricultural and pastoral possibilities, especially as large tracts of land are high and healthy, and it is a real white man's country. It is understood that the Government of British East Africa are anxious to obtain white settlers to develop the country. At present the rolling plains on either side of the railway are covered with vast herds of wild game.
