SOME STARTLING FIGURES

Tn the course of a conversation last evening Sir Joseph Ward mentioned to a representative of this journal that he had been supplied by Mr T. E. Donne with an interesting return of th» exports from New Zealand's great rival, the Argentine, for the year 1902. Sir Joseph, in consenting to the publication of the return, said the figures would no doubt come as a surprise to commercial men generally, Foilowing is the return : — April 6, 1903. During the year 1902 the Argentine •hipped to South Africa 393,266 frozen Bheep, 210,203 quarters of beef, 6600 tons of wheat, 74,126 tons of maize, 23,292 tons lof bran, 1,242,503 bales of hay, 870 tons o r sugar, and 23,086 boxes of butter.
