HARRIER NOTES.
The Dunedin Harriers hold their usual weekly run next Saturday, starting from th» Halfway Bush Schoolhouse. The V.M.C.A. Harriers have several new" members in bheir ranks this year. It is with pleasure one notices the interest they take in ihe outings, and also the headway they are making in thedr running. One or two are fast runners, notably Reid and Davie, the latter of football fame. In the- run homo last Saturday theso two men jeere to the fore. Here let me fciiggest to the officials 4hait, while catering for the front-rankers, they should, when convenient, do something to assist the junior runners. A funny experience* happened the V.M.C.A. hares la*t week. Ihey struck their own trai', and followed it for some distance before discovering their mistake; a id the pack, being unable to pick up the row trail, made for home, arriving almost as <=oon as t!if» hares. It is a very bad practice of hares to make- detours such as was made on Saturday, for if the peek were to come on to the hares interest in the run to a certain extent would be loot.
More harriers T Saturday afternoon caw the opening run of the Port Chalmers Earners, and Saturday evening the formation of the Ciwl Service Harrier and Abhlet.c Club.
It gives- me pleasure t o welcome .o the athletic field the members of the Port Chalmers Harriers, who on Saturday opened their season from Port in conjunction with the Dunedin Harriers. The Port Club have a membership of about 25 to with, and their numbers are likely to be increased as bhe season goes on. Tho officials 'of the Port Harriers wish members to roll up on Wednesday evening to take part in a training run with the loca.l football club. The Dunedin Harriers liad a fine muster
at Port last* Saturday. Thirty-seven all told for a wet Saturday is - hard to beait> and it shows how the members love the sport. The run, which was a -very dirty one, caused much amusement to the folk around the hills, but tho team cared little (for th» mud and dirt, as they knew that they had the bay to make acquaintance with. when, the run was over.
Mr John Mill very kindly entertained ■members aft-ei the run at the boa'teheds, * much appreciated kindness. After such a fine opening, I look forward to eeedng the Port Club flourish, «nd when they via* the Dunedin Harriers in town trust ths* they will bring a large following.
