The work that was transacted on the 21st was negotiated on the inside gra.33 track, -tthicli was fairly good going. Fulmen went two circuits at a good steady pace. The son oi Castoi — Hilda is looking well. Witchcraft left six furlongs behind in good style. Rancour was restricted to slow work. Gladys II and Komuri finished together after traversing four furlongs at a smart pace. Waitaki Maid went very free in a four-furlong spin with L. King in the saddle. Benson was given slow exercise, while Blackpool ran over seven furlongs at a .good £ast pace. St. Linda, who wps very erratic on the ti'ack, negotiated a ,oiice round at three-quarter pace. Brisa and Canteen were jumped off at the half-mile post, and finished tiie. distance together. Le Cair was treated to half-pace exercise, and Pampero, who is looking well, was given similar work. Edelweiss went well in a six-furlong spin, while" Pipi negotiated one circuit of the course in a taking manner. Jupiter, with the assistance of L. King in the saddle, traversed a mile and a-half at a fast rate, having the daughter of Gipsy Grand — Emmeline as a companion for the last four furlongs. The Otago Cup horse has brightened up considerably since returning from Christchurch, and will have to be reckoned with in the big race at the forthcoming meeting. La Reine, Off Chance, Red Banner, Red Gauntlet, Lady Babbie, and Slumberer were also exercised, and executed work -of a useful nature. After competing at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, both Garmoran. and Belligerent will n.ake the tour -around the goldfields meetings. These two horses should have no trouble in x>aying their way. M'Ginness has no less than 12 horses in work at present — namely, Maremma, Briea, Pampero, Red Gauntlet, Lady Babbie, Canteen, Komuri, Gladys 11, La Reine, St. Leger — Yalentina colt,' Abercorn coll, and Campbell. During the lust fortnight the caretaker has been hard at work making improvements for "the benefit of those who visit the outside machine at Wingatui. He has had the path gravelled, and the surroundings are now in first-rate order.* ■The grass on the inside track has been cut. It hacl grown to a great length during the wet weather. On the 22nd proceedings evened 'by Slumberer going once -round at half pace, while went free, negotiating^ two 'circuits. Red Banner and Quickshot accomplished (in company) two. rounds at' a fair, even gait, the last half-mile "being at tonspeed. They finished together. The Abefconi colt was treated to slow work, while Jupiter covered two circuits at a steady pace. Abercrombie left four furlongs behind in good style in 54sec. The son of Abercorn finished strong. The chestnut colt by St. ' Leger — Valentina accomplished one circuit at halfpace, and Witchcraft, who is looking well, executed work of a similar nature. Waitaki Maid cantered round to the four-furlong post, and was then extended to top speed, finishing well. Pipi had the appearance of being sore when extended at the finish of one circuit on the grass track. Blackpool moved along very freely in a mile gallop, the last four furlongs being at a good gait. The Orphan, who arrived on Tuesday, and is very big in condition and looks well, was treated to two rounHs at a steady pace. St. Linda tired somewhat at the finish of five furlongs. Nihilist has not recovered from the soreness which he contracted while at Riccarton, and moved very short in his work this morning. He accomplished seven furlongs with a light-weight in the saddle. Goldsyur, who was worked the opposite way, was only given trotting exercise. Hankins's team were on the walkinglist, while Fulmen, paid a visit to the blacksmith. Brisa, Canteen, Pampero, Lady Babbie, and La Reine were exercised before breakfast. Maremma has not recovered from the hardness of the Taieri course, which he felt on the 9th. The black gelding was being led about this morning. The weather for training on the 23rd was all that could be desired, and most of the trainers restricted' their horses to fast work. Before breakfast Pampero and Red Gauntlet tried conclusions over five furlongs, while Brisa, Canteen, and Gladys II ran half a mile at a fast gait. Jupiter was given cantering exercise, and Abercrombie was given once round at half-pace. After breakfast Slumberer was schooled over the hurdles, and afterwards traversed two circuits at threequarter pace. Fulmen and Rane'our were jumped off at the judge's box, and after going two furlongs the chestnut gelding was leading Fulmen by two lengths, an advantage held till the mile post^was reached, when Rancour pulled up, allowing Fulmen and Benson (who joined at the six-furlong post) to finish the iound. Witchcraft finished in front of Red Banner at the end of seven furlong's on the outside of the racing track. Quickshot joined the pair at the half-mile post. Witchcraft and Quickshot finished together, the t x ime registered for the last six fiirlongs being lmin 31iseo. St. Leger — Valentina colt was restricted to cantering exercise once round on the inside. Komuri and the bay colt by Herd Laddie — Gymkhana covered fh% furlongs in good style. The chestnut mare is improving. Blackpool proved too good for Le .Clair at the finish of six furlongs, the latter being. in trouble when the top of the hill was reached. Sharpshell spurted for a few furlongs. St. ■ Linda went once round at half -pace on the outside. Goldspur and Pipi also negotiated once round at a slow gait. Nihilist was on the walking list. The 24-th was an " off morning " with trainers, and the work done by the horses was of a slow nature. M'Ginness, Hankins, Smith, and Jackson were out before breakfast with their respective teams. Fulmen, Benson, Rancour, Witchcraft, Red Banner, and Quickshot were treated to two circuits at halfpace, while Pampero, Brisa, Lady Babbie, Canteen, Komuri, and La Reine were cantered once round on the outside of the racing track. Jackson's pair did slow work. The first to start operations after breakfast was Ellisj, who sent Jupiter two rounds at a fair, even gait. The son of St. Clair — Evening Star is looking bigger than he has been seen before, and should be a hard horse to beat in the Otago Cup. Abercrombie merely cantered, while Slumberer and EdelAveiss were treated to a good working gallop of two circuits on the outside at half-pace gait. St. Linda, Sharpshell, St. Leger — Valentina colt, •^^1 Occident— Lady Florence filly, Nihilist,

I The Orphan*, and Pioneer were also given slow I work. Red Gauntlet, who puJled very hard, I covered one round at a good swinging gallop, and seemed to relish his work. Blackpool went well in a three-quarter pace gallop of I oßce lound on the outride of the grass track, while Le Clair covered the same distance, but at a slower speed. The laFt-named is very | sore. The Herd Laddie — Gymkhana colt gall loped once round at a slow gait. Pioneer arrived from Winton on Thursday "evening, and is accoriimedated at Mr A. E. Bacon's, Mosgiel. The son of Tanguard — Cqcoanut is in charge of T. Blee. The caretaker (G. Fletcher) has the track in fair condition, having cut the grass on the main course, which now looks well. I don't think the trainers will have any room to complain in this respect. The work of Saturday morning was, as a rule, fa*t. By 5.30 Slumberer started operations by covering two circuits at a good, fast gait. Waimate Maid jumped off from the five-furlong post, and ran the distance at top speed. Red Gauntlet held Canteen safe at the end of half a mile, which was traversed in 57isec. Jupiter, on the outside of the racing track, finished up a mile and a-quarter in 2mhi 28sec. The flying machine, as he is called by many, covered the distance in 56sec. After breakfast Ellis set the ball rolling by sending Edelweiss and Abercrombie six furlongs on the outside. Edelweiss had somewhat the beet of the trial at the finish, but Abercrombie was carrying over 9st, while the St. Clair filly had about Vst 51b. "Witchcraft proved too fast for Red Banner at the end of seven furlongs. The watch recorded lmin 46sec for the distance. Pione-er left two rounds behind on the grass at three-quarter pace. • The black gelding moved very free in his work, and is looking well. On Sunday morning most of the local horses were treated to walking exercise, with the exception of Jupiter, Ukase, Pioneer, and tliedaughter of Gipsy Grand — Emmeline, who did steady pacing exercise. Dundas and Benzoin executed half-pace work, while Caeabianca and Dundee were cantered Pioneer traversed once round at a good swinging gait. Dundas, Benzoin, Casabianca, and Dundee arrived from the north on Saturday evening. The former pair are acommodated at the syndicate's stable at the racecourse, while Casabianca, who is in charge of Price, is stopping at O'Kane's. . Sliortly after son Monday M'Guinness commenced operations by sending Gladys II a circuit at half pace, while Brisa and Can- | teen negotiated one round at an even gait. Ea Reine was very anxious to get away when negotiating one circuit on the outside. Dundas, single-handed, left one mile and a-quarter behind' him in 2min 16sec, which is a real good trial. , It took place on the main. - track, but the chestnut had a light-weight in the saddle. Hermosa, on the same, track, slipped over five furlongs in lmin 7sec, going very free at the finish. Lady Babbie and Pampero were treated to half-pace •work. Blazer had no trouble in registering 62sec for the last halfmile of a round on the plough track. Red Gauntlet and Battler did half-pace exercise, r?ulmen and Rancour ran a half-mile along the back stretch in 56sec. Both horses finished togeiiher, but the chestnut horse was pulling hard. top speed, but did not impress one as very game. Off Chance went very pleasingly "on the outside gra&s. Ukase finished up six furlongs on the main track in lmin 25sec.
