William Maish and John Higgins w°re fined £10 each on the 28th for making bets with youths at. the Riccarton racecourse.
On Wednesday, 21st ult., six men who had all been in a hotel together engaged a special coach at Springfield to take them to the J co-operative works at the Midland railway, about eight miles oft". After proceeding a little over a mile it is alleged that two of the mSn picked a quarrel with two others in the coach, and the four got oiit, and the coach went on and left them. Later in the evening two of the men were found in an unconscious state on the side of the road, one of them being so badly knocked about that he did not recover until next morning. The injured men were taken back to Springfield. Dr England, who was called in, found that one had his ribs knocked in. Both complained of being robbed — one of £14 and the other of 16s. The police to-day arrested two men on the Midland railway works on a charge of assault and robbery, and brought them to Christchurch.
On the 29tb a lad named Henry Cunningham, 17 years of age, escaped from the Burnham industrial School. He was arrested by the police and returned to the 'scligql .on Wednesday evening. Next day
■when about to be punished for his offence by the superintendent (Mr T. Aichey), he rushed at the latier with a knife, and .stchbed him in the neck about half an inch from the jugulir vein. The wound, which was a serious one, t«< dieted by Di Symes'. Cunninghpih was immediately placed in cu&toclv.
An inquest was held at Chri&tchurch on Monday touching the death of Ellen Moon, wife of W. J. Moon. Deceased died at the hospital on Wednesday, but the inquest had been adjourned to allow deceased's stomach to be examined by a doctor. The jury returned a verdict that deceased had died from the effects of some irritant poison, producing congestion of the lungs, but there was no evidence to dhow how or by whom the poison was administered, or to enable the jrry to arrive at a decision as to the exact nature of the poison. The jury added a rider stating that it did not entertain the slightest suspicion against the husband of deceased.
