OBITUARY.
— — « London; August 30. Sir Saul Samuel, late Agent-general for New South Wales, is 'dead. The newspapers pay a high tribute to Sir Saul Samuel's public financial successes, and ascribe the excellent credit of the colony to his splendid personal experience and judgment. The Right Hon. Sir Saul Samuel, Bart., K.C.M.G., C.8., J.P., born on November 2,. 1820, was the son of the late Sampscn Samuel/ of London. He sailed for New South Wales in 1832, and after completing his education at Sydney he became extensively engaged in squatting, commercial, mining,, and manufacturing pursuits. His j>ublic career commenced in 3854, when he was elected a member of the Legislative Council. He was again elected in 1856, and in 1859 he was Colonial Treasurer in. the Porster Administration. He held the same portfolio under different Governments till 1869, besides which he acted as Postmaster-general in several Governments. In 1880 he resigned the Postmaster-generalship, and was appointed Agent-general for the colony in London. He was created C.M.G-. in 1874, K.C.M.G. in 1882, C.B. (civil) in 1886, and a baronet in 1898. He returned, after a year's leave, in October, 1898, and was thanked by Mr Chamberlain for the manner in which he discharged his duties. He was twice married.
