LONDON, August 29. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,340,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,080,000 quarters. A shipment of South Aus : tralian wheat sold at 30s 9d, a Tasmanian cargo, at 30s 3d,- and another. Australian cargo realised 31s. "Tin: 'On " spot, "£136; three- months/ £133." -- - ' ' Stocks and Shares. — Banks : Australasia*, £77; New South Wales, £43; Union, £37 10s; National of Nevr Zealand, £3. New Zealand 4 per cent, guaranteed stock, £101 ; New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company 4 per cent, prior lien stock, £91. At the tallow auctions 1800 casks were offered and 450 sold. Mutton— Fine, 27s 3d ; medium, 265. Beef — Fine, 26s 6d ; medium, 25s 6d. August 31. The Bank of -England returns show the stock of gold coin to be £33,793,000, and the reserve £23,335,000.. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 47.33. The notes in circulation total .£29,810,000 ; public deposits, £9,184,000; other deposits, £40,007,000 ; Government securities, £18,025,000; other securities, £25,973,000. * Three months' bills are discounted at 3| per cent." Consols are quoted at £98 7s 6d,. Quotations for ' colonial Government stocks are subjoined, compared with those ruling at the close of last week : —
The wheat markets are firm, but inactive! Heavy rains are checking the French harvest. Copper is " quiet. Spot, £72 12s 6d ; three months, £73 ss. Lead, £17 12s 6d. Pig iron, 765. Sugar is steady. German, 12s. The Bradford wool market is firm. Common sixties, 19^d ; super, 20^d. The market is extremely good ; all sorts are well held ; holders are firm, and stocks low. September 2. Frozen mutton : Crossbred wethers and maiden ewes — Canterbury, 3§d ; Dunedin and Southland, 3^d ; North Island, 3 l-16d. Lamb : Unchanged. River Plate crossbred or merino wethers — Heavy, 3d ; light, 3 l-16d. Beef unchanged. Rabbitskin Sales. — There is a good demand, and the bulk of the offerings were sold. Best advanced The others are unchanged. - Currants, 455. Tallow.— The stock' is 27,630 casks, the imports for the month 11,819 casks, and the deliveries 7199. Tin. — The stock is 15,413 tons, on spot 4604 tons, afloat 4209 tons, deliveries 2638 tons.
