During the pa&t week I paid a Msit to Mr J. R. Macdonald 1 s estate at Levin. He is one of Mr Prosser's Ponrua patrons,- and at present has Whitney and the Quilt — Maude filly stabled theie. He is also well known as the owner o/ Opal, Toriki, and Titoki. There are two stallions running on the estate— viz., Waitiri's brother Ifiko (Musket — Uira) and Rip Van Winkle (Somnus— Waimaiaiiia). They, are running with mares all the year round, and look well on it. Ekui (Patriarch— Pacific mare), mare by Revenue — Somnus mare, bay mare by Quilt— Spearfeldl, by Nordenfeldt; bay male by Soniuus; brown mare by Bull's Eye — Gclden Grape mare; bay maio Manawanui, by Somnuo— 'lowton maie, are all in foal to Hiko. Manawanui has had two foals, both fiiiies ; and the Bull's Eye marc a colt foal — all by Hiko. Theie Pie thiee Torpedo mares ituimng -with Rip Van Winkle, all being in foal. Thsy are : Kokiri (from Kopeki), full sister to Toieki; mare from Honeysuckle (lull sister to lorcu-ila;; mare from iviaid oi the Mountain Uu'l sister to Volcano). They are all biack m coiou , cUid the Toreki mare has a ( coit ioai by ii J ux) Van Winkle. The imported American tiott:n^ horse, Companion, is to serve his first season m tha district, and should lmx^iove that class oi slock. Otner stock i turning on the place aie ths well-known peric-rrner Titoki (Purir: — Uiov/nleaf), who is enjoying a spell, but will piobably be m commission in a month or two ; two-year-old gelding, by Quilt — Wamgongora; live-year-old brown geiding, by Ramarama — Biownleaf, a useful sort, who is used as a hack ; three-year-old bay filly, by Stepniak — Rosesx^ur (darn oi G-oldspur) ; five-year-old bay gelding, by Hiko — Queen Rose; two-year-old brown gelding, by Waterfall — Primrose \darn of Bush Kose, etc; ; Ronald, bay gelding, by Strenuous, who won a steex>lechase at Marton last season; full brother to Ronald, untried; two-year-old bay filly, by Quilt — Jeuzail; black msie, by Torpedo — Uira, 4yis; bsy gelding, by Quiltf-Ua, 25'rs old; bay gelding, Toy Quilt — Basilisk, 2}'rs; black mare, by Torpedo — Kor>eki, 4vs. After being handled and broken by W. M'Kay, to whom I am indebted for showing me over die x^lace, the youngsters are railed to Porii'ua, where they are prepared for the more serious business.
Good nominations have been received for the Rangitikei meeting. There are no less than 33 entered fo; a four-furlong Scurry. There are only five in the big race, which is ltin over a mile and a-quarter.
Germaine (by The Painter), dam of The Miser, Gobo, etc., was buried on Mr J. R. Macdonald's estate.
Ecoka Hohepa, who died last week, was a wel'-known Maori chief lesiding at the Waiwetu. He was the only Maori member of the Wellington Racing Club for about 15 years up to the time of his death.
Revenue, by Uncas II (Ingomar — Aida), the disappointing half-brother to Donald, Tilokowaru, and Plain Bill, who wa« ric-d by Tifr J. R. Macdonald, and later on did stud duty in the Otaki district, has been unsexed. September 3. The monthly meeting of stewards of the Wellington Racing Club was held to-day. The judgment in the matter of the Rebounding Lock appeal case was read and laid on the table. Fiom the Trainers' and Jockeys' Relief Fund, D. Hands, jockey, was voted £5t5 t and S. W. Tatham, trainer, £15. The following gentlemen riders were elected : — -Messrs R. Buick, J. Miller, F. Buick, and P. Smith. The Programme Committee appointed at the previous meeting recommended that for the spring meeting, November 22, 24, the programme be the same as that of last year, with the exception that-two hurdle race handicaps of the value of lOOsovs be substituted for the two-year-old events of last spring, the distances of the jumping events to be one mile and three-quar-tsrs and one mile and a-half respectively. It was recommended that the summer meeting in Januaiy next be extended over thiee days, the 22nd (Anniversary Day), 21th, and 26th; the Wellington Cup to be 650sovs, less 3 00sovs and 53sovs for the second and third horses. The Wellington Ricing Club Handicap, to be run on the second day, will be the same as last year — viz., GOOsovs, less 50sovs and 20sovs for second and third horses. The principal event on the third day will be known as the Port Nicholson Handicap, one mile, and will be endowed with 300sovs, less 40sovs and lOsovs, place money. The North Island Challenge Stakes, to be run at the club's autumn meeting, will be on the same lines as the last — viz., 300sovs, for two, three, and four-year-olds, waiglvt for age, with penalties and allowances. The Programme Committee also recommended that m futuip the stakes be paid in full instead of leps 5 per. cent., as has hitherto been the custom. The report was adopted. Mr J. B Hai^ouit was c-lectod a vice-president of the club in place of Mr G. Hutchison, resigned. Mr Robt. T. Turnbull was elected a steward to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Harcourt's pro-
li'Ction. The. Course Committee was autha\_ rioed to proceed with the necessary work in con\' _ nection with the training tracks, and also the completion of tlie new grass gallop. The trea* 1 ' s-irer laid on the table the draft balance sheefi for the past year, but as the auditors had nof^ yet examined it, the matter w:-s postponed till 1 , a meeting of the stewards to be held at ai^ early date, when the annual report will also be dealt with. A number cf applications fo.O trainers', jockeys', and ..apprentices' licenses, was considered by sub-committees and inosf of them granted.
