CANTERBURY.

The foundation ptone of the new Agricultural and Industrial Hall was laid on the 14th, by the Mayor o£ Chri&tchurch, with the visual ceremony. The hall and offices are expected to be finished by October, in time for the Canterbury Jubilee Exhibition, "which will be held in it.

At a well-attended meeting of the South Island branch of the Sheep Breeders' Association on Thursday a resolution was passed reopening the Flock Book until the end of October, to allow of merino sheep being

' registered. It was decided that registration could only be effected on payment of a double entry fee and payment of arrears of subscriptions as from the start of the Flock Book. Deputations were appointed to wait on the various agricultural associations in the colony to urge that only stock entered in the Flock and Herd Books should be allowed to complete at shows. The date of turning the first sod of the Waipara-Cheviot section of the Christ- | church-Blenheim railway has been definitely fixed for March 28, and at a meeting of j the Chamber of Commerce and citizens today it was decided to assist the settlers { in making the ceremony an imposing one. i At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association on the 16th the annual report congratulated I members on the success of the last metro- ! politan show, and also of the working of ' the year. The balance sheet showed the , receipts at last show as £1126 14s 6d, as ! against £1042 2s 2d. The income for the year was £3403 6s sd, and the expenditure £2805 5s 6d, leaving a credit of £598 0s , lid on the year.
