AUCKLAND.
Colonel John Rogers, C.8., a brother of Mr Thomas Rogers, of Auckland, attached to tlie Egyptian army, has been promoted
to be a pasha by the Khedive.
This car-
ries the rank of Major-general in the
Egyptian army. At a meeting of employees in various Auckland tanneries it was unanimously de-
cided to recognise the voluntary action of the employers, avlio had reduced the hours of labour in their establishments to 48, by forwarding to the chairman of the Employers' Association a letter expressive of the gratitude of the workers for the concession. Only one yard 'held out. An elderly man named George Donnelly was charged Avith using insulting language in a public place, calculated to proA r oke a breach of the peace. It appeared he reviled the British ensign flying and the Queen, and used decidedly ultra-Boer language. He was fined 20s and costs (£1 4s 6d).
