KAITANGATA.
March 12.— The weather is on the whole very good, if we except last Friday morning, when it blew a perfect hurricane from the S.W., accompanied by a bitterly cold rain. To-day was an ideal harvest day, and as a few of the farmers have started cutting, it is to be hoped that we shall get good weather now for tit least a month. Luckily we'have had no frost yet. Improvements;-— Duiing the last few months oilr local painter (Mr James Campbell) has been very busy at his trade. He' has done a good few private houses, and among the public buildings painted and varnished are the Bank of New Zealand, National Bank, Wesleyan Church, Presbyterian Church, creamery, and last— and not before time — the Post and Telegraph Office. This last particularly was much required.
River Bank Protection.— A start- has at last been made to drive the piles on the roadside river bank. Mr M'Parlane, Balclutha, is the contractor, and as he is very familiar with this kind of work, we may expect to see the job finished in a few weeks, particularly so if he gets good weather.
Picnic. — This annual event of the employees of the New Zealand Collieries and Oil Company takes place at Mount Stuart on Wednesday first. G-iveri'- fine weather, the day's outing should prove most enjoyable. One thing we trust, that the Railway department will provide two engines, so that we may get home sooner than we did last year.
-The War News. — On 'receipt of news of Cronje's - surrender, flags were hoisted, bells tolled, and -the children at the local school granted a holiday. The news of the relief of Lady smith was .celebrated by every available flag being hoisted. There- were no fewer than eight flags ■ displayed on our locomotive. Bells were rung, flags hoisted, and both the whistle of the local locomotive and the
"horn" at* the mine were most appropriately sounded for a considerable time — a most commendable way of letting everyone within hearing know that there was good news from the seat of war; • •
