NORTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST. WELLINGTON, March 14.

The Quickstep Competition in connection with the band contest was decided to-day. > Ten bands took part, and marched through the town to the Basin Reserve, where a fairly large crowd gathered. ]n the ab- ' sence of Mi Code, of Melbourne, who is not yet out of quarantine. Mr C. D. M'lnto-h judged the musical portion of the display, various local volunteers acting j similarly in the military. for B flat comets took place. Mr E. T. Code, of Melbourne, acted as judge, and gave his awaru as follows: — " B Fiat Cornet Solo. — J. Parker (Wellington), 100 points, 1 ; J. The band contest lust night was confined to pieces chosen by the band- themselves, and lasted tul after midnight. The bond con Lest was brought to a clo^e about midnight on Saturday. The following arc the results ox the various competions: —

Francis (Palmer&ton North) won the tenor solo with 82 points; and Foire^t \ (Wellington) the baritone with 107. being . within one of the possible. Bunt (XoithEast Valley) was second with 105. and Judge Code s.aicl i-hat he had never heard such beautiful playing us lay between these two men. Buckley (Wellington) won the sopraao cornet with 117 points, and Wanganui Garrison earned off the quartet for cornets, euphonium, and tenor horn, -with 126 poinL&, Wellington Garrison being second with 124.

TLe Wellington t Garrison ."wins the Benson Shield with a ' total of 354 points, which were awarded j for music in the marching competition of j the bonds' own selection 133 points, and in the test selection 161. They also won the first prize of £100 for their own and test selections, the results of which give the j bands the following points : — j
