DAILY TIMES LIST.
The February number of " The Record," the - missionary magazine of the federated Presbyterian Churches of Australia and Tasmania-, J contains an extract from a letter received by the editor (the Rev. ~W. S. Holland) from a, j friend, who is travelling in India. In one 1 place, when this correspondent wrote, water j was being sold for one anna (one penny) a ! pint. Poor people cannot pay this, and as for the animals, how will they quench their thirst? In the Bhor State people are plucking the ! leaves off the trees, grinding them, and eating . them ! When banana skins are thrown out, they ! run for them, and devour them! The Govern- | ment are doing what they can to meet the needs of the poor people, but the correspondent thinks there is need of private help besides. One shilling will keep a man and his family for a week. Moreover, help is wanted at once.
