THE DUNEDIN CARNIVAL.
On Monday night of this week the Dunedin Jockey Club and the Tahuna Park Trotting Club held meetinga to deckle what was best to be don© with the racing carnival commencing next week, the date of the fourth contingent's departure having been fixed for Saturday, tho 24-th, one of the race days ; and it was eventually resolved to let the Trotting Club's fixture stand as advertised, and to alter the Dunedin Jockey Club's third day from Saturday to the following Monday, unless, indeed, the date pf (,he contingent's departure is altered, in which case the Saturday
x-will.be reverted to by the Jockey Club. Th< present arrangements, therefore, stand thus:, f j Wednesday, 21st March.— Racing at Wingay tui (Dunedin Cup). Thursday, 22nd Maiph — Trotting at Tahuna' Park (Tahuna Cup). _, Friday, 28rd March — Racing at Wingatui (D.J.C. Handicap). ' > Monday,* 26th March — Racing "at Wingatui' (AnmverSafy Handieax>). "Wednesday, 28th March— Trotting at Ta* huna Park (Telegraph Handicap). ' ' The acceptances for both meetings are pub* lishecl in this issue, and it will be seen that? they promise excellent sport. As to the: Tahuna meeting, next week's issue will be in time for the tips. My present task is merely; to say what I think will win at the Dunedini Jockey Club's meeting. For the Hurdlo, Race I consider that Ilex will very likely beat Dundee, but I would sooner stand Clinkee, than the top weight, and venture the opinion, that Waikaia may be troublesome. The Hack Handicap may go to "Witchcraft, but she is no certainty. As to. the Autumn Han-, dicap, I plump for Melita, and esteem Parn^ pero dangerous. Advance reads like a goocl tiling for the Dunedin Cup, but I expect tpi' see Sant Ilario' press him mighty hard. This; Sant Ilario is a real clinker at his best. Do? you want Mr Stead's tip? Here it is: Ha gave 725gs for Sant Ilario's brother in Jami- ■ ary last. That is good enough for me. lam not bold enough to tip this maiden to win,' but he is the one I reckon may very likely, give Advance trouble. The Maiden Plate iss a very open race, and in picking Grandshoo I may be, a long way out of it. For the Publicans' Handicap I like Briza, but give Blazer, Paladin, Dundas, and Suzannah a, chance ; so ifc must be a particularly open, race. The Selling Race may go to St. Ouida I or C4randshot, and in the "Welter I like De«* coy and Gold, imless old Maremma is fresh " i enough to show his form. My present tips t then, are : Hurdles. — Clinker. Hack Race. — Witchcraft. Autumn Handicap. — Melita. Dunedin Cup. — Advance. Maiden Plate. — Grandshot. Publicans' Handicap. — Briza. Selling Race.— St. Ouida. Welter. — Decoy. There is to be a race for contingent horses, over hurdles, after the Cup. This is sure to attract a large field. '
