(Sublata causa, tollitur eOectus.) Life traders stern, who in death deal "With guarded breasts of shining steel, Rulers commanding land and sea, Breathing the breath of victory. In porthole, deck, and conning lower You loosen every vein of power; You tremble, throb, and shake, and fume, Scattering wild seeds of death and doom, Shooting spite in fiery showers, To kill the heart that never cowers. Flying shot, and shard, and shell The tumult and disorder swell. Each smoking monster death, death sings, Hurling it forth on fleeting wings. Heartrending cries, crimson-red sea, Flags ascend, show victory ; Guns thunder not, cease shell and shard, And what— ah, what? — is your reward? Shame, shame is yours — yes, yours and ours, "We've killed the heart that never cowers. Brave hearts have quelled as brave a foe, Death's grip has grasped and laid him low. The anthem rings through hut and hall To celebrate a foeman's fall. Vain boast is ours, cruel, harsh, and vain To ridicule the- worthy slain. Though armoured breasts and steel-clad sides The sea of death and victory rides. Shame's taunt is ever yours and our 3 To kill the heart that never cowers.
