A RINGER AT MASTERTON. The stewards of the Masterton Racing Club sesumed on December 21 the inauiry resard-

ing the bona fides of the mars Ethel, winner of the Hack Scurry at Opaki on December 9. After taking a groat deal of evidence, the unanimously resolved that W. A. Donald (who signed the mare's nomination paper in the name of J. E. Williamson) be disqualified for life; that the boy Ernest Onndy, in the employ of Donald, be severely cawtioned, but the stewards considered proof against him in connection with the alleged ringing in of Ethel not strong enough for punishment; that the jockey Edward J. Chitham, of Palmerston North, be disqualified for life for his connection with the matter. It was further resolved that Ethel be disqualified for ever, and the stakes won be paid to the second horse. The evidence was strong that Ethel is identical with the bay mare Virtue, Mr Piper, of Christchurch, identifying by a photograph of Elhel. The inquiry was adjourned for four weeks in order that R. S. IJcnry, of Auckland, be summoned to appear and produce Virgie, and failing his attendance tho stewards will deal with him and Virgie on the evidence and infirmation they possess.
