WAIKOIKOI.

September 19. — Farm work has continued to make good headway during the past four weeks. Oat-sowing in nearly every instance has commenced, and with several this work is already well advanced. In this connection it is gratifying to note that nearly all our farmers are taking increased care to sow only sound, welldressed grain in ground that has been reduced to a fair tilth. Pastoral. — Lambing has now fairly commenced, and is engaging attention. Generally speaking, the ewes are in fair condition and the lambs strong. Except in early, well-fa-voured localities, grasis as yet affords but a -scant bits-, and warm weather is much needed. Juring the past fortnight large numbers of 'reezers have been railed out of the district, and for these good prices have been obtained. The demand for stores is as yet not keen. Entertainments. — Several of these have taken place here lately, chief amongst which was a social given by the ladies of the district to their 'friends. This affair was a most enjoyable one. Starting at 8 in the evening with indoor games, these in variety, interspersed ■with vocal and 1 * instrumental selections reci■tations, etc., quickly passed the time until midnight, when dancing was commenced, and kept up for several hours. Needless to say, the ladies, ''in- their capacity of hostesses, acquitted themselves 'admirably. -Mr Don, of -Chinese mission fame,' pays us a visit shortly, and the cricket club concert takes place on Jhe-30th inst.' Influenza. — This scourge is still amongst us, and in some cases is unusually severe. On its account the school is at present closed. Personal. — Mr Dugald Macaulay. who has paid a 16 months' visit to his friends in Glasgow and other parts of the old country, returned last week.
