CIYDE.

September 19. — Sharp frosts have occurred here recently, and the fruit blossoms will probably be injured to some little extent. Death. — John Ryan, of whom I wrote last week as receiving serious injuries from being (kicked by a horse in the stables at the rear of the Hartley Arms Hotel, succumbed to those injuries on the evening of the day of receiving them. The post mortem examination revealed the fact that Ryan had several ribs broken on one side, a broken bone piercing the liver; also, that his skull was literally crushed to a pulp. An inquest was held before Mr.M'Carthy, S.M., coroner, and a verdict returned in accordance with the medical testimony. The unfortunate man's remains were interred in the Clyde Cemetery on Wednesday last, ''and, sad to say, without the usual rites of Christian burial. However little one may think of the efficacy of the burial ceremony in general, it cannot be denied that, in appearances at all events, it is a good old custom the Christian Church holds fasi to; and, as Christians, we are apt to miss the usage when I it is absent from the burial of a fellow ChrisI tian. • Blood and Breeding. — Mr B. Naylor has made a further addition to his stock of pure-bred Clydesdales for which Chestermains estate is j so justly famed in Central Otago. Mr Naylor ' informs me that his latest purchase is the bay filly Royal Rose, by St. Alexander — dam Flower V, both imported. Royal Rose was bred by Mr J. R Mackenzie, of Tapanui, and was one of the Glenkenich stud recently brought under the auctioneer's hammer at Gore. The price paid for the filly was 42gs. — Breeders of thoroughbred stock in Central Otago will regret to learn that Glencairn, the favourite stallion; succumbed 'to an attack of inflammation last week. This is a severe loss "to the genial owner, Mr M' Arthur, of StrathClyde. Gaoler's Residence. — Some two years have elapsed since" first I drew public attention, tairough these columns, to the state of ruin the local gaolor's residence was allowed to fall into. Occasionally during the two years I have referred to the matter, and now — well, now that the house is tottering upon its foundation, and insurance companies are wary in "taking the lives" of the occupants, a start is about to be made to rebuild. I did flatter myself that the authorities paid some little attention to my notes, but I feel not a little hurt that they delayed attending to my suggestions xintil this date. Probably they hadn't got the money to go on with. In i charity to myself I'll consider this the reason of their delay; and now I have much pleasure in tendering my regards to the gaoler upon I the happines.3 that is in store for him — a new house. Lignite. — Messrs Aitken and party have taken up a lease of land for coal mining purposes I at 'Dairy Creek. The coal measure existing at Dairy Creek is a well-known extensive one, and beyond doubt extends far into the acres taken up recently. I wish Aitken and party I every possible success,* for xindoubtedly we require a little competition in the coal trade, as in most other trades, and their sucess wili a_ssure cheaper fuel than, ia now procurable at Clyde.
