NELSON.
On the 13th a Nelson sharebroker and commission agent, Frederick br. Newman, was arrested on a charge of forging the signature of William Beatty, jun., to two promissory notes of the value of £48 15s and £50 respectively. He will be brought up to-morrow. Other charges are pending against the same accused. The amount involved altogether is stated to be over £1000. At the Police Court on Monday Frederick George Newinan, a sharebroker and commission agent, was committed for trial on five further charges of forging promissory notes for sums totalling £253.
CANTERBURY. At the Christchurch S.M. Court on the 13th Mary Box and Robert George Grey were each fined £5 and costs for cruelly ill-treating a horse by working it in an unfit condition. Mr Beetham remarked on the frequency of similar charges against the same accused, and said that if the practice of ill-treating horses was not discontinued, someone would have to go to gaol. At the Christchurch S.M. Court on the 13th Joseph Penfaud Grossmann was charged with forging and uttering a promissory note for £1450, purporting to be signed by Thomas S. Foster. After hearing the evidence of two witnesses, accused was committed for trial. Bail was allowed, two sureties of £300 each being required. The Canterbury Jubilee Exhibition will be opened in the first week of November 1900.
