A DENIAL.
In the House this afternoon Mr Duthie rose to make a personal explanation in reference to a statement made by Mr Flatman in last night's debate on the report of the Police Commission. He understood that Mr Flatman had charged him with what had amounted to bribery and attempted bribery in connection with the recent by-election in Wellington. Mr Flatman said that he was most anxious that Mr Duthie should have an opportunity of denying what he considered amounted to a reflection upon him, but what he (Mr Flatman) had said had been, said on the strength of a statement made to him by a friend of whose reliableness he had no reason to doubt- Mr Duthie said that the statement made by Mr Flatman that he had found money for the lady members of his election committee to bribe other people about the town was absolutely without foundation ; in fact, no money had been paid by him in that way nor by any member of his committee. The matter then dropped.
