CONTINGENT EXPENDITURE.
A return was laid on the table this afternoon showing the details of the amount expended during the year 1897-98 under the item "General contingencies" of the Colonial Secretary's miscellaneous services vote. .The total is £9527. Telegrams to Australia, England, and other places cost £2209 ; travelling allowances of Ministers, £810 ; travelling expenses of Ministers, £980 ; subscriptions to newspapers, £265 ; night watchman and extra messengers, £193 ; extra clerical assistance, £964 ; cleaning offices, £1081 ; sessional allowance to private secretaries, £60 ; awards for arrest of deserters, £70 ; passages of labour delegates attending conference, £33 ;- expenses in connection with the, reception of his Excellency the Governor, £80 ; advertising and printing, £153. Amongst the other items in the list there is one of £5 for the purchase of opossums for acclimatisation.
