VOLUNTEERS.

The Dunedin Engineers held a parade at the Garrison Hall on Wednesday evening, 14th, when Major Beal acted as inspecting officer. After examination of the arms and accoutrements, the company were exercised in infantry drill by the officers and non-commissioned officers. At the conclusion of the parade, Major Beal took occasion to express his satisfaction at the appearance of the corps and the work done. The parade state was: Captain Barclay, Lieutenants Hoss and Nicolson, 1 sergeant-major, 1 bugle-major, 1 quarteru>aster, 4 sergeants, 4- corporals, 2 buglers, oU privates;— total, 66. On Monday evening, Surgeon-major "Will delivered the second of the course of ambulance lectures in the Engineers' Orderly ftoom. There was an attendance of about 50, and the lecturer took as his subject " Hemorrhage or Bleeding," and gave an extremely interesting lecture. The Engineers have just completed the second of tho series of two competitions arranged for the Morris tube, Sergeant Eagle succeeding in putting on a record scoro of 3.5 out of a possible 35. The G-. Company (City Rifles) paraded at the Garrison Hall on the 15th. There was a good muster, and the corps was put through manual exercises and company movements by Sergeant-major Towler. At the conclusion of the parade, a meeting was hold in the orderly roow for the rmrpose of electing a junior

lieutenant. Captain. Jackson presided. On the motion, of Sergeant Peat, seconded by Sergeant Dawson, Colour-sergeant Coghlan was elected to the position. The Coloursergeant, in a felicitous" speech, acknowledged the honour conferred upon him. The Port Chalmers Naval Artillery paraded for inspection last week before Lieutenantcolonel Webb. There were present: — Lieu-tenant-commander "Waters, Lieutenants Dodd and Bauchop, 1 chief petty officer, 4 first class and 3 second class petty officers, 2 buglers, and 43 gunners; — total, 56. After inspection the company were exercised in company movements and s-eotion firing by the officers, and manual firing by the petty officers. Advantage was taken of Colonel Penton'e late visit to Dunedin to have the corps inspected by that officer. On ttat occasion there were present 3 officers and 58 petty officers and men — a total of 61 ou; of a strength of 72. The men were exercised at gun drill and submarine mining. The gunnery section were critically examined ia gun drill and theoretical knowledge in gunnery, as were also the sub-marine sections in their particular branch. The Commandant of the Forces expressod himself, after parade, as well pleased wilh everything he "had seen. With a view to enabling the corps to fully man the gims at Taiaroa Head, in addition to the sub-marine defences, it is proposed to considerably increase the strength of the corps, no difficulty being anticipated in bringing it up to 85 or 90 men. A most enjoyable social was held recently in the shape of a progressive euchre tournament, the occasion being an invitation from Mr De Maus, one of the life honorary members of the corps, who in addition to providing three prizes, very kindly entertained the members at a smoke social.
