SLY GROG-SELLING.
IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT FINE. INVERCARGILL, September 14. At the Police Court to-day Mary Carr was sentenced by Mr Poynton, S.M., to three months' imprisonment without ttie option of a fine for sly grog-selling. She had been convicted on two previous occasions of a similar offence. The Stipendiary Magistrate stated that prohibited persons were in the habit of frequenting these places, the keepers of which were defying the law. This woman had only been released from gaol nine days, after serving a sentence of two months in default of payment of the previous fine. A charge of sly grog-selling against Fanny
Hall, another boarding-house keeper, will ba heard on Friday.
The Tasmariian Parliament is behig aske& to subsidise the Hagey Institute in Hobart. Out of 500 pictures submitted to the ISelection Committee of the Sydney Art Society in connection with their forthcoming show f about 260 works have been accepted. Mr Van der Velden is among the exhibitors. The Hutt County Council have decided to join with other kindred bodies in making s united protest to the Government against the excessive charges incurred through the Government valuation. It was stated at a recenf meeting that the cost of the Government valuation last year was £1800, of which the Hutt County Council had to pay £292, whereas the previous valuation by the council cost less than £100.
