THE PRESERVATION INLET REEFS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

INVERCARGILL, September 16. News from Preservation Inlet by pigeon post, arriving at Invercargill at 1.25 p.m., announces that there is absolutely nothing startling from the reefs. The steamer with 23 passengers arrived there last night at 9 o'clock, having left Invercargill at '12.30. (From a Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, September 17. The steamer Invercargill arrived this morning from Preservation fillet. She brotight tho following mine managers' reports: — Golden Site. — During the last fortnight I have extended the uprise from the intermediate level, and holed through to No. 3 crosscut. As we approached this level the stone improved, and we frequently saw gold. lam now driving the intermediate level north, having about 18in of quartz, and we are now clear of sandstone boulders. The face is in good slate country standing nearly on edge. The battery started on the 9th inst., running one shift, and working satisfactorily. I will clean up for the steamer leaving on the 7th October. Morning Star. — Tho battery is working full time, and the mine workings are progressing favourably. The manager reports that he can see splendid gold in all the No. 1 A stope3. THE MOUNT IDA COMPANY'S DREDGE. NASEBY, September 16. The Mount Ida Company's dredge was successfully started yesterday. A large number of local jpeople were present, and amongst those from Dunedin were Messrs E. B. Cargill, Cutten, and Knewstubb. The dredge was christened the Mount Ida by Mrs James Mitchell. Speeches were made by Messrs Cargill and others. Everything went off without a hitch. The dredge is working splendidly. THE ISLAND BASIN GOLD DREDGING COMPANY (LIMITED). On application to the office of the company, we find that the report of our Alexandra corres pondent anent this company and the owners of the Ranfurly claim is not correct. We understand that the directors have agreed with the owners of the claim referred to as to working their claim on terms favourable to the company, and that the dredge is at the present moment bein^ floated to, and should be moored on the claim to-day."

DEEP STREAM AMALGAMATED HYDRAULIC SLUICING COMPANY (LIMITED). The secretary reports receipt of 117oz lldwt 18gv gold, being the result of an interim wash up for the first 17 days of September. DREDGING RETURNS. The secretary of the Golden Beach Hydraulic, Elevating, and Dredging Company (Limited) received a wire on Saturday afternoon from the dredge master stating that he had washed u\j for 132J hours' dredging for 630z 17dwt gold. The return from the Clyde Company's dredge last week was 18oz. The river is 3ft above noimal mark. The return from the Diuie&in dredge was 17oz for five days. The river was in flood on Thursday. The .uuncdm Stock Exchange report the following returns for the past week: — Otago Company, 38oz; Golden Gate Company, 20oz ; Golden Treasure Company, 18Joz for five days. Mr C. S. Reeves reports a return from the Erterurise dredge for last week of 360z 7dwt 3g-. Friday's Dunstan Times reports: — "The Ei;reka No. 2 had a splendid return last week, being close upon 2520z, and we believe they expect to get a better wash-up this week. The dredge is working in the river opposite the Hydraulic dredge. The Molyneux Hydraulic dredge keeps working a cut up along the bank towards the top boundary. The return last week was 20oz 18dwt 18gr." Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun., manager Golden Teriace Dredging Company, reports a return of 40oz 7dwt gold for week ended September 10. Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun., manager Matakitaki Go 1 ! Dredging Company, reports a return of 12oz 3dwt for 102 hours' dredging. Dredging Returns. — Evan's Flat, 17oz for the week ; Tuapeka Flat, lloz ; Golden Terrace (Nokomaii, 6Uoz. — Tuapeka Times. The return from Messrs M'Gill and party's dredge at Little Waikaka (reports the correspondent of the Mataura Ensign) has been 480oz retorted gold for 36 weeks, or an average of over 12oz a week. The Jutland Flat (Waipori) Gold Mining Company (Limited) obtained last week 16oz 2dwt of gold for 144 hours' wages time; 131 hours' actual dredging. Mr R. T. Wheeler, jltn., manager of the Golden Terrace Dredging Company (Limited) reports a return of 370z 14dwt gold for week ended 17th September. Mr N. P. Hjorring, secretary of the Maniototo dredge reports a return of 290z 18gr for 210 houvs' dredging, and lOoz 2dwt for 60 hours' elevating. Mr A. C. P. Commin, secretary of the Kyeburn Gold Dredging Company (Limited), reports a return of 12oz lOdwt gold for the week. GOLD MINES OF VICTORIA. The gold production of Victorian mines during the eight months of the present year amounts to 529,2390z. This brings up the total gold production of the colony to 62,376,6870z, of the value, at £1 per ounce, of £249,506,748. Tho amounts paid in dividends by public companies in Victoria during the past four years has been as follows:— In 1594, £459,721 10s; 1895, £438,507; 1896, £519,695 8s; 1897j £537,094 7s; 1898 (six months), £296,006 9s. ; KLONDYKE GOLD DREDGING COM- !
