TWENTY-FOUR HOURS' WALKING CONTEST.
A 24 hours' walking competition between J. Scott, T. Pcott, and J. Wintrcup, commenced on Friday night last, attracted a considerable number of persons to the Garrison Hall on Saturday, particularly in the evening. All the men left the track at 9 o'clock in the morning, J. Scolt resuming at 9.35, and putting on two laps before the other two appeared, which placed him two laps ahead of Wintroup and five laps ahead of T. Scott. At 3.26 p.m. Wintroup retired, having gone 88 miles 14- laps. He was thon seven laps behind J. Scott and one behind T. Scott. At 20 minutes to 6 o'clock Thomas Scott retired from the contest, J. Scott having immediately before that lapped him, thereby increasing his lead to seven laps. The contest at this stage was therefore practically won by J. Scott, who completed his 100 miles at seven and a-half minutes to 6 o'clock, and left the track till 23 minutes past the hour, when he resumed walking, and at the expiration of the 24 hours had covered 111 miles. It may be mentioned that his previous record, done in the Garrison Hall, was 125 miles. The retirement of the other two competitors some hours before the expiry of the time, left him in the position of winner, so that it does not follow that he could not have covered moro than 111 miles in the space of time allotted. As a matter of fact, the walking during the afternoon was, generally speaking, leisurely in character, though occasionally a few brilliant spurts were made. Towards the close of his performance Scott treated those present to an exhibition of his powers, and did some fast work. The judges were Messrs W. O. Kirkcaldy, C. Bills, J. M'Donald, 0. Keast, J. Gebbie, and S. S. Myers, and the referees Messrs J. D. Norris and J. W. Baxter. The following are the distances covered each hour
