ATHLETICS.

DUNEDIN AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. The annual meeting of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club was teld in the City Hotel on Saturday night, Dr Roberts (vice president) presiding. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, which congratulated the club on the success of last year's operations, said he must confess that athletic gatherings buch as were held under the auspices of the club did not seem to be in such popular favour as was wont to be ihe case. This doubtless was due to cycling, -which carried with it some greater degree of excitement than running said iumping contents. The time had arrived

when the Championship meeting was to be held lids year in Dunedin. The last time the meeting was held here it was a decided success, and it was to be hoped that all interested in athletics would do their best to make the gathering a success this year. Other towns looked upon the Ch&mpionship meeting boiog held here with a certain amount of jealousy. They said that athletics were not supported he">'e like in other towns, and that Dunedin was not entitled to its turn. It devolved upon them, therefore, to show that Dunedia coula conduct the meeting quite as well as other towns. It had been done here before, and they could do it again. — (Applause.) A short discussion ensued, in which those who took part dwelt upon the necessity of making to, special effort this year in the interests of the Championship meeting, after which The motion for the adoption of the report was cavried.
