SOUTHLAND NOTES.
By Goidspur. The programmes for Gore, Winton, and Wyndham are out, and Invercargill will soon follow, though the dates for Invercargill are not definitely fixed yet. It is to be hoped the new committee will adhere to the New Year dates as in former years. The Winton Guineas has only attracted an entry of four: — Mr Cochrane's b f by St. Olair — Le Loup mare. Mr 'Pennant's b f Dinna Forget, by Remembrance — Enchantress. Mr M 'Kay's br c Ardnarf, by FitzHercules— Parvula. Mr Swale's b g Mercury, by Merry Heart— -Aurora. I was favoured with a look at Gold Medallist, Waiuku, Opae, and Toriki before they were put on board the Rakaia at the Bluff. They were stabled at Jopp's from Thursday until Monday, and thanks to the courtesy of Mr H. Thompson in charge, a few others and myself were invited round for a farewell glance at them on Friday morning. They certainly look in perfect condition for their journey, and their quarters on the B.s. Rakaia are all that could be desired.
