LAKE WAKAKA.

Akbertown, May 31. — The weather has become suddenly veiy cold, and it rained h«av>ily last Tuesday, while a lot of snow fell on the hills. At times a bitterly cold breeze has "been 'blowing. Marriage.— Quite an important epoch in "the history of "Wanaka was marked at Pembroke last Wednesday morning — viz., the marriage of the Rev W. K. Grant, Presbyterian^clergyman in charge of the district, to Miss Bella Russell, who 3s a native of thetownßhipand a daughter of Mrs Russell, of the Wanaka Hotel The old residents who can remember Pembroke 30 years ago, wiien tnere was but one hut in the township, will thus aiote with satisfaction the enormous strides the district has made in the way of advancement, "which once more demonstrates the great power oi the Saxon race for colonising and advancing civilisation." The ceiemony was performed in TSLrs Russell's hall, the Rev. James Ovmmiing, M A., of Cromwell, being the officiating clergyman. Mr A. G. Thomson acted as best jnan, -while Mr Theodore "Eiisscll, the bride's brother, gave her away. The bridesmaids were Miss May Russell (the bride's sister) and Mr Peter M'Dougall's two little girls (the bride's nieces). Miss 'Beatrice Sachtler presided at the organ, and opened and .closed the ceremony with appropriate hymns, in which the congregation joined. The ( ceremony being over and the bride having received the usual congratulations, the assembly adjourned to Mrs Russell's large dining mom, there to partake of the wedding breakfast, which , was got up In the best style. A number of Coasts were given and responded to. The toasts had to "be curtailed, as Mr and Mrs Grant and Miss Grant. had arranged to jproceed to GFlenorchy immeili' ately, and it was necessary to-get across the Grown Terrace in daylight, it beinp; covered with snow ana the weather not very premising. The Rev. Mr Gumming also was desirous of returning to Cromwell. The iappy couple at last drove off amid cheers a»S showers of rice. Mr and Mra Grant were the recipients of many useful and valuable presents. The business places were closed in the morning, -while Mr Sachtler displayed a row of .flags across the street in front of his hotel. A list of the dresses worn by most of , the ladies at the wedding ceremony will be duly sent for the ladies' Page. _ la the evening Mrs Hussellgave a. ball in her fiali, which was coinJBortably filled

A Closed RoAiDWAT.— I notice in the last .re- ! •gort df -the Vincent County -Council .that sundry I Pembroke (residents have drawn the council's attention to the fact that Mr George Elliott has ■closed up the roadway that ran through his section. In one of my former notes I stated that thi* roadway was incorrectly made througii the I section before Mr George Elliott acquired it. A little amateur surveying hart been 'done €vidently, > for it was unwise to depart from the surveyed jroad. 'At a previous meeticg of the' council Mr M'George asked for a grant of £5 to make a new , load in the place of this cutting. This has since keen done. There were two ridges running across the roadway, and -the tops of these have been cut down and placed in the hollows at the foot of m j t. T. ere are two other sm all ridges yet that ■would .be better if treated in the Bame way, and i probably this may yet be done out of the £5 I grant. j
